10 Things You Didn’t Know About Gordon Ramsay
Gordon Ramsay is primarily known for his penchant for swearing, showing affection, and redefining culinary standards in every show he appears on. Since the early 2000s, he has consistently launched a series of successful reality cooking shows, including his latest 2022 ventures Next Level Chef and Future Food Stars. But Ramsay is much more complex than the persona he portrays on TV.
There are things that even people who consider themselves fans don’t necessarily know, and these things add more to his character than his constant use of the F-word. If one doesn’t learn to look beyond that, they may miss out on the complex and interesting person that Ramsay is.
He’s a Black Belt in Karate
Ramsay has said that he started practicing karate because he believes it’s an art. And like everything else in life, he trained hard for a few years until he achieved his black belt. Since Ramsay is a big advocate of hard work, this isn’t really surprising.
He was able to put his skills to the test in Hell’s Kitchen, where one of the contestants tried to slap him, and his quick reflexes helped him avoid the slap. The video also shows him being calm and composed, suggesting that this is due to the discipline that comes with karate. This is also the moment that brings out one of Gordon Ramsay’s best quotes.
He Started Out as a Pot Washer
Even before pursuing a career as a chef, his first job was as a pot washer at a local Indian restaurant where his sister also worked as a waitress. Having those humble beginnings certainly means that he appreciates everything he has achieved in life even more.
He wanted to be a professional footballer
As a child, Ramsay had ambitions other than being a chef. He wanted to play professional football (or soccer). At the age of 12, he played for Warwickshire and then Glasgow Rangers. According to his autobiography, he played a few games as a trial player.
But not everything went according to plan and Ramsay suffered a serious injury, which dashed those dreams. He then went to culinary school and got his first job in a hotel at the age of 19.
He is a voice actor
Gordon Ramsay has voiced more characters than most people realise. The characters often share his love of food and cooking, so it is very likely that he will voice a chef in an animated film.
He voiced Bolton Gramercy in Big Hero 6, a chef in Phineas and Ferb, and Mickey and The Roadster Racers, and even voiced his own cartoon character in series like The Simpsons.
He once kicked Joan Collins out of a restaurant
When Joan Collins went to one of Ramsay’s restaurants with former food critic A. A. Gill, she probably didn’t expect to be kicked out by the restaurant’s owner. Although he was known for being a mean guy—one of the most unpopular opinions about him—he was usually rude to people who deserved it.
However, Ramsay was so angry that Gill criticized his food that he let his pride get the better of him and they were both asked to leave the restaurant, leaving one actress furious, according to this interview. He later apologized to Collins, claiming that his mother had never forgiven him for kicking her out of the house.
He refused to cook for Donald Trump
It may not be well known that the only celebrity Gordon wanted to cook dinner for was Hillary Clinton. He is not new to political cooking, having previously cooked for British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his guests.
He has had Botox
It may be a little known fact about Ramsay that he has had Botox surgery. Living in the spotlight must be tough, but for Ramsay, it was his family’s comments about his wrinkles that made him do it. Sadly, his elaborate facial expressions have taken a toll on his face.
He has received awards from the Queen
He has been awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth herself, which stands for Officer Of The Order Of The British Empire, for services to the hospitality industry. However, Ramsay does not seem to be the type to enjoy his achievements.
