9-1-1 is taking a week-long hiatus, so fans are counting down the days and entertaining the wildest (potentially correct) theories about the future of Buck (Oliver Stark) and Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.), Eddie (Ryan Guzman), and the rest of the 118.
While we didn’t learn much about Season 8, Episode 6 from the teaser at the end of 9-1-1‘s recent Halloween episode, we do know that Buck learns a “jarring” truth about his boyfriend Tommy’s past. And we also know Eddie’s storyline is going to ramp up soon…
Ahead of Season 8, Episode 6, fans officially have reason to wonder: “Did Tommy date Buck’s ex, Abby?” and “Is Bobby’s priest returning?” The theories may ultimately prove to be just theories, but with two long weeks until 9-1-1 returns, they’re at least worth exploring. What else do we have to do!?
Curious why fans think Tommy and Abby (Connie Britton) may be connected? Why Bobby’s priest might be returning? And what else we know about 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 6? Here’s the 411 on 9-1-1.
Did Tommy Date Buck’s Ex Abby On 9-1-1?
During Decider’s Episode 5 interview with Oliver Stark, here’s how the 9-1-1 star teased Buck and Tommy’s Episode 6 storyline:
“It’s a case of being in a new relationship with someone and there’s more and more stuff to learn about them. Some of that stuff can be jarring and make you have to reevaluate where you are…It’s just a reflection of those two people figuring each other out, learning more about each other, and then working out if the relationship is worth navigating those issues and fighting to stay together for.”
In an interview with TVInsider, Stark also clarified the “jarring” stuff Buck learns is something new about Tommy’s past, not what we’ve seen in his 118 flashbacks. Then, in an interview with Parade, showrunner Tim Minear added the following tease:
“When it comes to drawing from 9-1-1’s extensive and oftentimes overwhelming lore you just have to look at where you are on the road, at the time. Otherwise, you’ll go completely insane. The nice thing about building canon behind you [is] you have now history for these characters. You can go back and interrogate that history and see what piece of that might work.”
That interview also said “viewers can expect a pilot plot line to come back around,” which brings us to the Tommy/Abby theory.
In the opening scene of 9-1-1‘s pilot, Abby says, “What’s your emergency? The first kind of emergency is the one we all have every day. You’re looking at my emergency right now: I’m 42 years old. It’s been a year since my boyfriend Tommy broke up with me — I’m still not over it…”
Would 9-1-1 really go there?! We would never put it past this gloriously unhinged show, but there’s no denying Minear’s pilot plot line tease may have other meanings…
Is Bobby’s “Hot Priest” Returning?
Another popular 806 theory is that the priest (Gavin Stenhouse) who Bobby met with during the pilot returns.
During a Season 7 interview with Ryan Guzman, the 9-1-1 star teased that religion and Catholicism could play a larger role in Eddie’s life following that whole Nun Incident:
“I think that’s the direction that Tim is writing towards. I mean, Bobby has always had a deep relationship with religion and Catholicism. So I believe this is going to be another conduit for Eddie and allow him to find some sense of structure in a moment of imbalance. It could be a very useful tool for Eddie to get his feet underneath him. How hard he leans into that? I don’t know. I don’t think that he’s gonna be a priest or anything. [Laughs] But I definitely feel like going to lean on what Cap has given him a lot, as he has before.”
While Eddie likely isn’t “gonna be a priest or anything,” perhaps he’ll meet a priest in Season 8, Episode 6! Guzman and Stenhouse follow each other on Instagram. And since the episode is called “Confessions,” this theory likely makes the most sense. I wonder if his phone will blare Katy Perry’s “Firework” this time of if he’s updated his ringtone…
What Else Does 9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 6 Have In Store?
While we wait for more details on 9-1-1‘s upcoming episode, fans have also noticed parallels between the emergency in Season 3’s “Eddie Begins.” Plus, Stark teased a bit more about the individual “challenges” that lie ahead for Buck and Eddie, so be sure to read our full interview.
9-1-1 Season 8, Episode 6 premieres Thursday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC with next-day streaming on Hulu.
