Netflix‘s drama series Virgin River follows Mel Monroe (Alexandra Breckenridge). Mel is a nurse who left her life in Los Angeles for a fresh start in the small town. Although she moves to Virgin River to escape the pain of her past, Mel finds herself falling for Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson), a retired Marine who owns the town’s bar.
Although the series has only three seasons streaming, the series showrunner Sue Tenney believes it could go on for millions more seasons.
‘Virgin River’ Season 4 will be supersized
The fourth season of Virgin River is set to debut sometime this year. With so many shocking cliffhangers, the upcoming season will span 12 episodes instead of the standard 10. Also, fans are expected to have answers to all of the questions that they’ve been dying to know.
“I can’t tell you too much because it’ll give it away, but you find out what’s going on,” Henderson told The Digital Fix via Hello. I’m just going to say that season four reveals and answers all the questions but then presents some more. I think season four is going to be really satisfying for people because of that giant cliffhanger. There were multiple cliffhangers, which gives a little love/hate situation for the audience, where they love but hate the wait. It’s going to be worth it because the writers really answer that stuff. I think people will be satisfied.”
‘Virgin River’ could go on for a long time
Thus far, Virgin River has been renewed through season 5. The fourth season is slated to debut sometime this summer, with filming for season 5 beginning in July 2022. Now, Sue Tenney, the showrunner for the series, hopes the show can go on for countless seasons.
After all, Robyn Carr has more than 20 books on the small town, so the show’s writers won’t run out of ideas anytime soon. “I want to do as many seasons as we can,” Tenney told US Weekly. “If we get the actual reveal [in season 4], it will detail more of how this all was intertwined. The webbing of that story goes all the way back to the first season, so it’s a connecting tissue that goes through four seasons.”
If the fourth season of the series does well in the ratings, we expect Netflix to continue to greenlight it.
‘Virgin River’ could have a Christmas special this year
Since there is a year-long gap between seasons, Virgin River fans have been crossing their fingers for a special Christmas this year. This would be especially helpful since there may be an even larger time gap between the premiere of season 4 and season 5.
“Season five, we were supposed to start in March,” Breckenridge revealed via Express. “But we’ve been pushed so… I don’t know. I don’t know, man. I’m hoping that maybe we’ll start in the summer. It would be nice to film in Vancouver in the summer rather than the winter.”
Since season 3 ended with a slew of cliffhangers, this might be a nice reprieve for viewers who may want something a bit more light-hearted between seasons.
