Gordon Ramsay Unleashes Raw Food Rage on MasterChef

Last week on “MasterChef,” one of the two home cooks from Portland, Sunshine Carlos, was sent home after judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Aarón Sánchez concluded that her undercooked ribeye didn’t please their palates.

That leaves just one Portlander, Jeet Kaur Sawant, in the competition. This season’s subhead is “Generations,” because the cooks are grouped into teams according to their ages. Sawant is on the Millennial team, and other teams consist of Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Gen Z.

So far Sawant has been fairly low profile, which has kept her from seeming like a frontrunner. On the other hand, not being on the firing line in the episode that aired Wednesday, July 17, was probably a good thing.

In the first field challenge of the season, the cooks went to a Los Angeles soccer stadium to prepare an element meal for members of the Los Angeles Football Club, coaches, and VIPs.

Anna, who won last week’s challenge, had the immunity pin, which kept her safe. She was able to choose which demographic teams would be paired up for the challenge. She chose to team her Millennials with Baby Boomers, to comprise the the Red Team. That left Gen X and Gen Z as the Blue Team.

The Red Team decided to prepare pan-seared halibut, lemon couscous, sauteed squash, broccolini and beurre blanc. The Blue Team opted for filet mignon, herb polenta, Brussels sprouts, red wine sauce and crispy pancetta.

The cooking process was, to put it mildly, tumultuous. Ramsay kept yelling at both teams that their proteins were raw. That is, Ramsay was hollering about raw meat when he wasn’t blasting the Blue Team for overcooking their filets to a charcoal state, a sentiment Ramsay capped off by kicking a charcoal filet out onto the field.

About all viewers saw of Sawant was Ramsay ordering her to send the food out, and she otherwise wasn’t on camera much.

The diners voted for the Red Team as the culinary winners, which meant Sawant was once again safe. But somebody from the Blue Team was getting the boot. When it came time to send someone home, the judges gave Chris, a member of the Gen X group, the heave-ho.
