Tim Matheson is a fan-favorite among Virgin River viewers with the Netflix romantic drama series bringing the veteran American actor a new legion of fans.
Virgin River star Tim Matheson has had a long and fruitful career to date which continues to go strong.
However, fans may be surprised to see the 75-year-old star looking youthful and unrecognizable in this throwback photo from an early role in the 1978 romantic comedy Almost Summer in which he played high school student Kevin Hawkins.
In the black-and-white image, Matheson is about 31 with Almost Summer pre-dating the classic 1980s Brat Pack era of teen movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and The Breakfast Club.
Matheson has a career dating back to the 1960s, appearing in TV shows Window on Main Street, Leave It To Beaver and My Three Sons, among other credits.
Along with Virgin River, Matheson is known for his portrayal of Eric ‘Otter’ Stratton in the 1978’s movie National Lampoon’s Animal House and Tucker’ Witch.
Some of his film parts include Killing Reagan opposite Sex and The City’s Cynthia Nixon, 6 Balloons and the Hollywood movie No Strings Attached.
In more recent years he has appeared in The West Wing as vice president John Hoynes with his turn winning him critical acclaim with two Emmy nominations.
He has also appeared in Breaking News, Hart of Dixie, Burn Notice, The Good Fight and This Is Us.
He will again be appearing in Virgin River season five, part two in the show’s holiday episodes.
Matheson isn’t just an actor but also a producer and director, helming projects such as episodes of Lucifer, The Last Ship, Suits and Criminal Minds.
Moreover, according to IMDb, Matheson has been working behind the camera on Virgin River and has directed four episodes.
The Californian-born star is also served on tour as part of the Marine Corps Reserves.
Matheson’s Virgin River character Vernon ‘Doc’ Mullins remains a firm part of the story despite his macular illness, which is forcing the medic to take a step back in his clinic.
He has also had some big storylines in the show when his secret grandson Denny Cutler (Kai Bradbury) turned up in Virgin River to connect with him and also met his estranged college sweetheart Rose (Susan Hogan), who kept secret her pregnancy and their son for 50 years.
There is also Doc’s stormy marriage to firebrand and the town’s mayor Hope McCrea (Annette O’Toole), which has had its ups and downs over the seasons.
