The cast and crew were supposed to start filming Virgin River season 6 in the summer of 2023, but the writers’ and actors’ strike threw off those plans. On the eve of the premiere of the Virgin River season 5 Christmas episodes, which hit Netflix on Nov. 30, Martin Henderson went live on Instagram with co-star Alexandra Breckenridge to check in, hype up fans for the episodes, and wish them a Happy Holidays. The stars of the series also revealed Virgin River season 6 begins filming in “early” 2024. Henderson revealed, possibly by accident, that filming begins in “February or March” while talking about Henderson and Breckenridge doing a Streamily when they’re back at work together.
Breckenridge stepped in and mentioned she “was asked to avoid” talking about production, but she seemed to confirm production is scheduled to begin sometime in early 2024. It’s unclear what the exact start date for production will be or how long production will last, but past seasons have filmed about four to six months. So, if they really do get started in February or March, filming should wrap sometime in the summer of 2024. It’s great that the cast and crew are getting back to work early next year. Normally, we’d plan to see Virgin River season 6 on Netflix in the summer or early fall, but it’s not very likely for 2024, though.
While we should see the new season, it’s much more likely that we’ll see Virgin River season 6 sometime in the fall or winter of 2024. There was hope that Virgin River would be one of the first Netflix shows to start filming, but given that the series films in Vancouver and never films over the holidays, we’ve been expecting the cast and crew will get back at it in early 2024. That seems to be what’s happening! Hopefully, there will be no further delays.
It’s been a while since Henderson and Breckenridge worked together on Virgin River. They revealed on the live stream that production on season 5 wrapped in November 2022, and they obviously haven’t worked together this year with the strike.
On the live stream, Henderson and Breckenridge revealed that conversations with the new showrunner, Patrick Sean Smith, have led them to believe they’ll be “working more.” We don’t know exactly what that means, but it sounds like we’re going to get a very Mel and Jack-heavy season.
Netflix has not confirmed the start of filming, but we’ll be anxiously awaiting more news about the sixth season of one of the best Netflix shows.
