Virgin River fans received the best news when Netflix finally announced the release date for season five is September 7. At that time, viewers will revisit the charming small town and get answers to long-awaited questions—like what will happen between Preacher and Paige. To top it off, the streaming service has confirmed that season six is already in the works.
Naturally, we wasted no time researching the details, from the cast to the potential release date. Keep reading to see what we know about Virgin River season six so far.
On May 17, several weeks ahead of season five’s premiere in September, Netflix announced that Virgin River is officially returning for a sixth season.
The show’s renewal came as no surprise, since Jinny Howe (Netflix’s Head Of Drama and Development) hinted that the story would continue beyond season five. She told Deadline, “I think we definitely see more longevity and growth with the show. As long as the audience asks for it and shows up—and I think we see with season four that the fandom is very strong and growing in many places as well—it feels like based on what we’re seeing with season four and the anticipation for season five that there is a lot more storytelling to offer us.”
Netflix hasn’t revealed details about the plot for season six just yet, but we do know what’s in store for season five—thanks in part to the one-minute trailer.
In the clip, we see Mel make a huge career decision while a devastating event shakes the small town. Howe told Deadline, “Season 5 is going to continue to stay true to what fans have loved about the show from the beginning; it feels like a community that we all belong to and that we’re all a part of, it’s very comforting, it gives you hope, and I think all of that is stuff that people can’t get enough of these days.”
She added, “I think what’s going to be interesting is to see this universe continue to grow and expand and to see new characters, other characters return. A lot of that was set up in the season four finale but it’s going to be really exciting to see all of that come to a head in season five.”
Although the possibilities are endless for season six, our guess is that season five will end on another major cliffhanger. And since season five will be split into two parts, there are plenty of storylines to explore.
Filming for season six hasn’t begun, and will likely be on pause for a while because of the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes.
This might confuse some fans because back in July, Henderson mistakingly teased on Instagram that filming had already started on season six. After realizing his error, he corrected the caption and wrote, “Waiting on set finding sunbeams shooting season 5…sorry I originally wrote season 6 which was a silly mistake because we haven’t made season 6.”
