What will Bridgerton season 4 be about?
Bridgerton season 1 followed the love story of Daphne Bridgerton and Simon, Duke of Hastings, season 2 followed the enemies-to-lovers story of Viscount Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma, and season 3 followed the friends-to-lovers journey of Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. And season 4 will tell the story of — drumroll, please — Benedict!
After much speculation, Netflix has confirmed that Bridgerton season 4 will focus on Benedict’s love story on July 23, 2024. “This author has been informed that it may be time to unmask the latest suitor on the marriage market,” the streamer wrote on social media, before adding: “The story of Benedict Bridgerton will be coming next season.”
If you’ve watched season 3, you know how much this season, um, revealed Benedict, so expect even more in season 4 as he tries to find his other half — according to a brief synopsis shared by Netflix, he will.
“Season four of Bridgerton focuses on free-spirited middle son Benedict (Luke Thompson). Even though both his brother and sister are happily married, Benedict is reluctant to settle down — until he meets a charming Lady at his mother’s masquerade ball,” a trailer for the upcoming season shared by the streaming service reads.
Bridgerton remains true to its original documentary format of following a new love story each season; showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed to Teen Vogue that she has “no plans to combine seasons.” “I want each sibling to have their own season, and I know Shonda wants that too,” Brownell said.
ICYMI, Bridgerton is based on a series of novels of the same name, written by historical romance author Julia Quinn. The novels detail the major romances of the eight Bridgerton siblings. The first two seasons of Bridgerton follow the events of the first two Bridgerton books: The Duke and I and The Viscount Who Loved Me. The third season jumps back in time, following the fourth book in the series, Romancing Mister Bridgerton.
It was this departure from the chronological order of the books that left fans eagerly awaiting an announcement about which Bridgerton sibling we’d see fall in love with next. While the season 4 love story was picked up before Bridgerton season 3 even finished airing, it’s now been revealed.
After the season 3 finale, it’s possible that Eloise, Benedict, or Francesca could get their time in the spotlight. Brownell told Decider that Francesca’s love story was a priority last season to set up “for later” so she could get her time to shine in season 5 or 6. “For those of you who are familiar, Francesca’s book takes place over a longer period of years and has more twists and turns,” Brownell added. “So we felt like we wanted to start that story earlier so we could present more chapters of her book.” It’s clear that Brownell is playing the long game with the Bridgerton siblings—speaking with Teen Vogue after the season 3 premiere of part 2, she noted that she has “a roadmap in mind for where” the show is headed. “Shonda and I have talked privately about our plans for seasons beyond season 4 if we’re allowed to continue in the way that we hope to,” Brownell said. Pray, pray. Pray.
