When will Bridgerton season 4 premiere on Netflix?
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the UK premiere of season 3 part 2, showrunner Jess Brownell confirmed the show’s current pace of development on a season-by-season basis. “We’re working hard to try and get the seasons out quicker, but it takes eight months to shoot and then you have to edit and then you have to dub into every language,” Brownell said. “And the writing process takes a long time, so we’re on a two-year timeline, we’re trying to speed it up, but somewhere in that timeframe.”
If the wait between Bridgerton seasons 2 and 3 doesn’t feel too daunting, that’s because the prequel limited series Queen Charlotte has been tentatively released in the spring of 2023. But it looks like we won’t have any other series in the Ton universe to tide us over in the meantime. Shonda Rhimes told Variety in April 2024 that she was “still trying to figure out” whether she wanted to make a second season of Queen Charlotte. “I don’t want to tell a story that doesn’t need to be told — you know what I mean?” Rhimes said. “I don’t want to do a second season of Queen Charlotte, and you’re like, ‘Oh, that wasn’t very good.’”
It looks like we’ll have to start officially rewatching the prequel series and the current trilogy… and just take it slow.
Most of the show’s namesakes — the Bridgerton family — are expected to return for season 4. That list includes: Luke Newton (Colin), Claudia Jessie (Eloise), Luke Thompson (Benedict), Ruth Gemmell (Violet), Hannah Dodd (Francesca), Florence Hunt (Hyacinth), and Will Tilston (Gregory).
Speaking to Teen Vogue in May ahead of the release of season 3’s first episode, Luke Newton mentioned that he was excited to see where Colin and Penelope’s love story would go in future seasons, confirming that he was in it for the long haul. “Absolutely. I feel very invested in the show… like I said before, I just love the people,” Newton told us. “I love my job. I love my role on the show, so I can’t see myself going anywhere. I just want to finish the stories. I mean, there’s still a lot to be done in season four, so yeah, that’s why I’m there.”
Adjoa Andoh (Lady Danbury), Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte), Lorraine Ashbourne (Mrs. Varley), Jessica Madsen (Cressida Cowper), Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich), Hugh Sachs (Brimsley), and Harriet Cains, Bessie Carter and Polly Walker as Philipa, Prudence and Portia Featherington respectively, are all expected to return. It’s unclear whether the eldest Bridgerton son will return as the 9th Viscount, along with his new wife, the Viscountess — aka Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley as Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma Bridgerton. It’s likely they’ll follow a similar path as Phoebe Dynevor, with a brief hiatus. Bailey has a busy few years ahead of her, with Wicked Seasons 1 and 2 set to release in November 2024 and November 2025, respectively; the actor will play Fiyero, the love interest of Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande).
In early 2023, Dynevor, who plays the calm Daphne, confirmed that she would not be returning for Bridgerton season 3 when speaking to Screen Rant. The actress shared that there weren’t any exciting storylines coming up for her Bridgerton character, or any storylines at all: “Sadly not in season 3. There’s a possibility in the future. But I’m just excited to see season 3 as an audience member.”
Variety reported shortly after that Dynevor hinted at her departure in a recent interview with the outlet: “I’ve done my two seasons. I’ve done what I wanted to do with that character, and she’s had a great storyline. If they ask me to come back in the future, who knows?” We’re hoping to see more of Phoebe as Daphne in future seasons, possibly in more guest roles like season 2.
