Cody Johnson Is Teaming Up With Taylor Sheridan, ‘Yellowstone’ Creator For ‘A Few Movie Things’
The singer says he had to turn down a role in ‘Yellowstone’ due to scheduling conflicts.
A country artist, Cody Johnson has topped Billboard’s Country Airplay chart twice, won a CMA award and has been a host for years. He’s also a longtime cowboy who recently took the top spot in the World Series of Team Roping Qualifier. But could Johnson be headed to the big screen?
With his horseback riding and roping skills, it seems like Texas native Johnson would be a natural on Taylor Sheridan’s hit TV series Yellowstone — in fact, Johnson had to turn down a role on the show due to scheduling conflicts. But he told Audacy’s Rob + Holly that he’s been in talks with Sheridan and his team about some future acting possibilities.
“We tried a couple of times [to appear in Yellowstone], and my schedule was too busy to make time,” Johnson said. “We’re looking forward to the future. There were a few things with the movies that I thought, ‘Look, if you guys let me know ahead of time, I could do this.’ ”
Meanwhile, the “Dirt Cheap” hitmaker recently extended his Leather Tour, adding 10 shows to the trip, including a show at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas on Nov. 9. Whether he’s on stage or (presumably at some point) on the big screen, Johnson knows the impact he has on younger generations, and it’s a role he takes seriously.
“I don’t forget that these kids, these young guys, will come to shows… eight- and nine-year-olds saying, ‘Mr. Cody, when I grow up I want to be just like you,’ and I was like, ‘Okay, Johnson, you have to make sure you’re setting a good example… don’t screw this up, because you’re going to disappoint that kid.'”
Johnson said he wants to be a good role model not only because of the impact he has on the younger generation, but also because he’s grateful for the career he’s built and the family he’s been blessed with.
“When I was younger, I was pretty wild,” he added. “I was blessed with the opportunity to have a career I never thought was possible, have a marriage I never thought was possible, and have two young children I couldn’t have dreamed of in my wildest dreams. I think you either screw it up or you become a real man.”
Of course, Johnson wouldn’t be the first singer to appear in one of Sheridan’s projects. CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year Lainey Wilson had a recurring role on Yellowstone, while Ryan Bingham played Walker. And don’t forget, actor-songwriter Luke Grimes was already a Yellowstone star when he decided to branch out into country music.
