In a recent social media post from Cole Hauser, fans finally got a sneak peek at the gorgeous setting for the show’s final season. But before you get too emotional about your favorite Western series ending, let’s take a trip back in time by highlighting all the Yellowstone filming locations through the years!
Of course, the real star of the show is the stunning Dutton Ranch. It’s set in vast fields with towering mountains and clear blue skies. But there are other sights to see, like Beth’s office and scenes in the town. So, you might be wondering: Where exactly is Yellowstone filmed? And is Dutton Ranch real? Before you go binge-watching every Yellowstone episode out there (and shows like Yellowstone), here’s everything you need to know about Yellowstone’s filming locations. It’s no secret that much of Yellowstone is filmed outdoors. The show is set on a working cattle ranch in Montana. But surprisingly, most of seasons 1 through 3 were filmed in the state of Utah, home to the actual Yellowstone National Park. In fact, The Salt Lake Tribune reported that 70 to 75 percent of seasons 1 through 3 were filmed throughout the state of Utah. Marshall Moore, executive vice president at Utah Film Studios, once told the Deseret News that Yellowstone “is the biggest show to ever come to the state of Utah.”
To get a little more specific: Park City, Ogden, and Spanish Fork are all notable locations for the show’s production.
It’s important to note, however, that this information does not include scenes shot on the fictional Broken Rock Indian Reservation. Instead, these scenes were filmed on the Crow Indian Reservation, which is located in southern Montana. And if we map it out, you’d be driving for seven hours on the road to get from the reservation to the show’s ranch.
These days, the Yellowstone cast spends much of their time in Montana filming at a real-life ranch in the state where the show is set. And as it turns out, cast members like Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, have returned to Montana to finish filming the final episodes.
