Yellowstone Season 5: Everything We Know So Far
ellowstone fans, I see light at the end of the tunnel. According to an official press release from Paramount Network, the series’ return date has finally been set: Sunday, November 10, 8:00 p.m. ET. Paramount also reported in May that the cast was in Montana to film the remainder of season 5—often referred to as 5B. However, the network didn’t specify in the press release what viewers will see when Yellowstone returns. Most likely, the season 5 finale will mark the final episode of the hit Western series. Either way, that’s good news!
As Yellowstone fans know, anything is better than where we left off. Back in January 2023, viewers were halfway through season 5 when the midseason finale ended on a cliffhanger. Since then, we’ve had an endless news cycle that included creator Taylor Sheridan and star Kevin Costner blaming each other for the delay. The off-screen battle effectively shut down production and put the entire series on hold. Costner eventually stepped down entirely. Paramount then announced plans to end the show—with or without him.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Costner revealed that he’s still open to returning. “I’d love to be able to do it, but we haven’t done it yet,” he said. “I thought I’d do seven [seasons], but right now we’re only doing five. So how it goes—I hope so—but they have a lot of different shows going on. It could be. It could be that this comes back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I’d love to do it.”
Keen-eyed sleuths of ongoing dramas may recall this, but one of Costner’s alleged points of contention about returning for the season 5 finale was his belief that he had negotiated a paycheck for seasons 6 and 7—even though Paramount had decided to end the popular Western with season 5. He also reportedly had a clause in his contract stating that he retained final say over how his character, patriarch John Dutton, died, if Sheridan decided to kill him off. Costner later explained that the delay was due to a lack of scripts. He said that Sheridan had been overworked at Paramount on too many shows, and that the actor had been pushed to shoot extra days he didn’t have while directing his new film, Horizon. The upcoming Yellowstone episodes continue to expand Paramount’s Sheridan universe following the 1883 and Harrison Ford-starring 1923 prequels. (Yeah, that’s… confusing.) Meanwhile, the network is hoping that the finale will still go down in a bang.
When will Yellowstone return?
According to Paramount, Yellowstone season 5 will resume on Sunday, November 10, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET. The midseason finale, which aired on January 1, 2023, set the stage for the upcoming drama—and teased potential violence for our TV cowboys. So far, the season has followed John, Beth, Rip, Jamie, and Kayce as they navigate a contentious gubernatorial election, growing threats from outsiders, and a terrifying blackmail situation between the Dutton brothers. In the most recent episode, the possibility of murder appeared.
