A Guide to Every Yellowstone Spinoff, Including the Upcoming Series The Madison, Starring Michelle Pfeiffer
The Dutton family is vying for more spinoffs in the show’s sprawling universe.
Taylor Sheridan’s sprawling Yellowstone universe continues to dominate cable and streaming networks, as audiences can’t stop watching the Dutton family’s time-traveling adventures in the Western-set series. Yellowstone is to Paramount Network what SpongeBob is to Nickelodeon: a beloved, wildly popular series that seems to have no end in sight, drawing streaming subscribers to Paramount+.
If you thought the upcoming season 5 finales would be the end of Yellowstone — especially since Kevin Costner isn’t returning as John Dutton III — Paramount Network is ready to continue the story with a slew of prequels and spinoffs. That’s right, the Dutton family’s march through time is as strong as a herd of buffalo. With recent and upcoming shows set from the late 19th century to the present day, fans may be confused by how many Yellowstone spinoffs are out there—and not all of them are about the Dutton clan.
With the recent announcement that Michelle Pfeiffer will star in and executive produce the upcoming spinoff, The Madison, which is not about the Dutton clan, here’s your guide to all the Yellowstone spinoffs.
1883 tells the story of how the Dutton clan came to Montana. This prequel focuses on former Confederate captain James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and his family — his wife Margaret (Faith Hill), daughter Elsa (Isabel May), and young son John (Audie Rick). The family travels from Tennessee to Texas in search of prosperity in the westward expansion of America. James meets rough-and-tumble cowboy Shea Brennan (Sam Elliott) when he arrives in Fort Worth and joins his wagon train heading west. The short film chronicles the dangerous journey the Dutton family faces through the Old West and Great Plains in search of a new place to call home. (Trailer)
Jump forward a few decades, and a new generation of Duttons emerges, including James’ older brother Jacob Dutton (Harrison Ford) and his Irish immigrant wife, Cara (Helen Mirren). The drought, the Great Depression, and Prohibition of the 1920s are just a few of the challenges the family faces. The Dutton family must tackle the challenge of protecting Yellowstone Ranch, as an aging Jacob fights to maintain the sanctity of their family as patriarch. After the success of its first season, 1923 is expected to return for a second season.
Paramount Network
In November 2023, Paramount Network announced the development of a new Yellowstone spinoff, 1944. While the plot of the series has not been revealed, you can expect it to follow the lives of the Dutton family during World War II, in a year that saw D-Day when the United States and the Western Allies invaded northern France. Who is running the ranch? What challenges do they face in wartime America? The setting is ripe for a drama.
The Madison (unspecified)
After Yellowstone ends with its upcoming series finale, the story will continue with a new family and a new Montana setting. Madison (formerly titled 2024), starring Michelle Pfeiffer, is a contemporary look at loss and human connection as a New York City family moves to the Madison River Valley in 2024. Will the November 10 Yellowstone season 5 finale be a transition to the new spinoff? Hopefully some of the Dutton family will show up and make the family feel right at home.
