‘1923’ Update Shared as ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff Is Returning
The long-awaited second season of the Yellowstone prequel, 1923, has a new filming location.
The hit Paramount+ drama stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. It serves as a Kevin Costner-led origin story for Yellowstone and is also a sequel to 1883, one of seven shows in the Yellowstone universe.
After the first season ended in February 2023, it was revealed that 1923 has been renewed for a second and final season. Production began in June with Austin, Texas, announced as a filming location. But it was also recently revealed that the show will film scenes in San Antonio, also in Texas.
“The San Antonio Department of Arts & Cultural Affairs’ film division is actively working with the production team to facilitate filming of the Paramount+ 1923 television series in San Antonio this fall,” said Stacey Norton, marketing, film and music administrator for the San Antonio Department of Arts & Cultural Affairs, according to KSAT.
Oscar winner Helen Mirren will be in San Antonio, with locals sharing their thoughts on the major television production, according to the San Antonio Report.
“We were impressed with the attention to detail and commitment to keeping us informed, and we are excited about this project, especially because of its potential benefits to the community, and hope it will pave the way for more filming opportunities in downtown San Antonio,” said Canela Vintage store owner Canela Kern.
Filming in San Antonio will take place in phases, beginning in September, when set designers will descend on the city to time-lapse local streets to make them authentic to the era of the show.
“Hearing the possibility that they could walk past our windows on the show, or even walk in the door… that’s really exciting and cool to me,” said Brielle Insler of San Antonio-based nonprofit and political consulting firm Düable Brand Trust.
The season finale sees the long-awaited showdown between Jacob Dutton (Ford) and oil tycoon Donald Whitfield as he attempts to seize the Dutton family fortune for his own benefit.
Paramount+ has yet to reveal a premiere date for the second season of 1923.
The first season of 1923 was Paramount+’s most-watched premiere ever in the United States, drawing a total of 7.4 million viewers, making it the biggest series premiere on cable in 2022, according to the streaming service.
