A Guide to All the Latest and Upcoming ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoffs, Sequels, and Other Projects Taylor Sheridan Is Working on
There’s no doubt that Taylor Sheridan is one of Paramount’s star writers.
Since transitioning away from acting, Sheridan has become one of the most prolific writers in Hollywood and helped redefine the Western genre with his hit “Yellowstone” series.
He’s so prolific that Paramount spends more than $500 million a year on his shows, The Wall Street Journal reports.
And that number is likely to increase as his list of spinoffs and other projects in the “Yellowstone” franchise continues to grow.
While ‘Yellowstone’ may end this year, after the success of ‘1883’ and ‘1923,’ Sheridan will continue to expand the series with a number of prequels, sequels, and spinoffs.
Here’s everything we know about all the Sheridan-helmed projects currently in development.
1. ‘Yellowstone’
The show that started it all is currently in its fifth season.
Centering on the Duttons, a cattle ranching family in the United States, the neo-Western series has continued to grow in viewership with each season.
When it first debuted, Sheridan, who created the series with John Linson, took on the role of writer and director.
But he’s since loosened up a bit, bringing in other directors.
After delays due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes and a standoff with star Kevin Costner over his filming schedule, the second half of season five is expected to begin airing on November 10, 2024.
2. ‘The Madison’
While announcing that the flagship series would end last year, Paramount bosses have promised to “expand this incredible world” that Sheridan has built.
In February of this year, Puck reported that Matthew McConaughy and Michelle Pfieffer were in talks to lead the cast of the sequel to the current film, currently titled “2024.”
Fast forward a few months and it has been officially announced that Pfieffer will star and executive produce the new series, which has been retitled “The Madison.”
Series creator Sheridan will write the series, which follows a family of New York natives living in the Madison River Valley of central Montana.
According to Paramount Network, “the series is a heartfelt study of grief and human connection.”
Chris McCarthy, co-CEO of Paramount Global and chairman/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, said of Pfieffer’s casting: “She is the perfect anchor for the latest chapter in the ‘Yellowstone’ universe, ‘The Madison,’ from the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan.”
There’s no word yet on McConaughey’s future in the ‘Yellowstone’ universe.
3. ‘1923’
“1923” focuses on the second and third generations of the Dutton family in the early 20th century. It was originally set to be a limited series, but a surprise announcement of a second season was made shortly after the film premiered in 2023.
Tagged as the origin story of “Yellowstone,” the series stars Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford.
The show was slated to begin production on its second season in June 2023, but the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes delayed filming until mid-2024
“Dexter” stars Jennifer Carpenter, Augustus Prew and Janet Montgomery are among the new faces joining the cast for the second season.
4. ‘1944’
“1944” is another “Yellowstone” spinoff that Paramount has greenlit for Sheridan. It’s also the one we know the least about.
It’s expected to — like previous prequels “1883” and “1923” — take place during the year of its title and focus on the struggles the Dutton family faces during the war.
5. ‘6666’
This long-rumored “Yellowstone” franchise spinoff, first announced in early 2021 and originally set for a 2023 release, is said to revolve around the history of a Texas ranch that Sheridan now owns.
However, the show’s future remains uncertain. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Sheridan explained the delay in getting “6666” (pronounced “four-sixes”) out. “For some reason, it takes a special level of care that’s unique because it’s a real place with real families working here. You have to respect the lineage,” he said. “I told [the studio] to be patient.”
