Full House: DJ & Steve’s Relationship Timeline Explained

DJ Tanner and Steve Hale’s love story was told over the course of many seasons and episodes of Full House and the sitcom’s Netflix sequel show Fuller House. The two young lovebirds didn’t meet until later in the ABC television series, but once they did, they quickly fell for one another. DJ and Steve’s romance was a central plotline in the last few seasons of Full House, and their story continued in the spinoff, which premiered 21 years after the series finale.

Even though they dated other people throughout Full House and Fuller House, DJ and Steve always managed to find their way back to one another. Of course, like many other couples on television, they hit a few bumps in the road and experienced many trials and tribulations along the way. However, DJ and Steve undoubtedly had one of the more beloved and intriguing romances in the two shows, and thankfully, their story ended on a happy note.

Season 5, Episode 14 – Season 6, Episode 4: DJ & Steve Begin Dating

Steve first appeared in Full House season 5, episode 14, when he took DJ on a date to the movie theater, but their plans were derailed when Stephanie and Michelle had to tag along. However, Steve returned in the season 6 premiere, and this time, he was officially DJ’s boyfriend. The Tanner family went to the airport to pick up DJ after her school trip to Spain, but they caught her kissing Steve. Of course, Danny was unhappy with this new development in his daughter’s life (especially because Steve is two years older than DJ), and neither were Stephanie and Michelle. But DJ’s sister later understood that Steve wasn’t stealing DJ from them.

Season 6, Episode 5 – Episode 11: DJ & Steve Fall In Love

DJ and Steve said “I love you” to one another in Full House season 6, episode 5, much to Danny’s demise. Danny was worried about DJ being too distracted by Steve and neglecting her schoolwork, so he banned her from seeing him. Eventually, they reached a compromise, and DJ resumed her relationship with Steve. However, it was only a matter of time before the couple hit a bump in the road.

Season 6, Episode 12 – Season 7, Episode 18: Steve Stays In San Francisco For College To Be With DJ

DJ and Steve’s romance was going strong until he started looking at colleges because he was a senior in high school (while DJ was a sophomore). Steve had his heart set on Daytona Beach University in Florida after he received an acceptance letter from the school, but DJ was less thrilled by the news. She didn’t want him to leave her in San Francisco and attend college on the other side of the country.

They got into a fight over the dilemma in Full House season 6, episode 12, after Steve gifted DJ a Daytona Beach University sweatshirt for Christmas. Even though DJ apologized for being selfish, Steve decided to stay in California and attend a local community college to raise his grades and be close to his girlfriend. It was a Christmas miracle.

Season 7, Episode 19 – Season 8, Episode 23: DJ & Steve Break Up

DJ and Steve were together for almost two seasons before their relationship came crumbling down in Full House season 7, episode 19. After Steve briefly left for Los Angeles for schoolwork for one of his classes, DJ realized they were drifting apart. Steve returned, and during a trip to Eagle Mountain, the couple broke up because they felt the passion was gone from their relationship. Of course, DJ and Steve wanted to remain friends, but it would be a while before the audience saw Steve again after the season 7 finale.

Season 8, Episode 24 – Fuller House Season 1, Episode 1: DJ & Steve Reunite & Break Up (Again) Sometime Later

During the last few minutes of the Full House series finale, Steve returned and rekindled his relationship with DJ. He showed up at the Tanner’s front door in a tux and offered to take DJ to her prom. She accepted, of course, and the two shared a kiss. It’s unclear when, but DJ and Steve broke up again following the series finale, and the two married other people. More than 20 years following DJ’s prom, Steve was a divorcée, and DJ was a widow with three children, as seen in the Fuller House pilot episode. The two characters were still close friends, but it was obvious that Steve still had feelings for DJ.

Fuller House Season 1, Episode 1 – Episode 13: Steve & Matt Compete For DJ’s Affection

During the entirety of Fuller House season 1, DJ was caught between two love interests — Steve, her high school sweetheart, and Matt, her coworker at the veterinary clinic. However, DJ decided it was too soon for her to date anyone following the death of her husband and chose neither of the two men in the finale. As a result, Steve and Matt quit being rivals and became friends, while DJ put herself first.

Fuller House Season 2, Episode 1 – Season 3, Episode 10: DJ & Steve Date Other People

During the Fuller House season 2 premiere, Steve revealed that he had begun dating CJ, who was eerily similar to DJ. Meanwhile, Matt was seeing Crystal, but he broke up with her to be with DJ after she made her decision about which man she wanted to date. Steve almost married CJ, and DJ almost got engaged to Matt in Fuller House season 3, episode 10. Neither event happened because Steve learned that DJ initially chose him over Matt in season 2, but he was with CJ, so she settled for Matt. Steve called off his wedding, while DJ turned down Matt’s proposal.

Fuller House Season 3, Episode 11 – Season 5, Episode 8: DJ & Steve Rekindle Their Romance

Since DJ and Steve were fresh out of serious relationships, they waited a bit to be together in the second half of Fuller House season 3. Unfortunately, right after they rekindled their romance, Steve was offered a job as a foot specialist for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was hesitant to accept, but DJ convinced him to jump on the opportunity. Steve only lasted a few months in Los Angeles before he quit and returned to San Francisco to be with DJ.

Fuller House Season 5, Episode 9 – Episode 18: Steve Proposes To DJ & They Get Married

After more than a season of dating, Steve proposed to DJ (once he got permission from Danny) in Fuller House season 5, episode 9, and DJ agreed to marry her high school sweetheart. Since Stephanie and Kimmy were also engaged (to Jimmy and Fernando, respectively), the three women decided to have a triple wedding. DJ and Steve got married toward the end of the Fuller House series finale, and they lived happily ever after.
