Yellowstone star Kevin Costner’s box office flop confirms streaming release
Yellowstone star Kevin Costner’s new film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 has a US streaming release date.
The Western will be available for Max subscribers to watch from Friday, August 23.
A UK streaming date has yet to be announced, but it can be purchased or rented from digital retailers such as Amazon and iTunes.
The film covers four years of the Civil War in the late 1800s, exploring the conflict through the eyes of families, friends and enemies trying to figure out what it means to be in the United States.
The first film in the series, released in June, received disappointing critical reviews, with critics describing it as a “three-hour prologue” to future films, as well as “boring, frustrating and sleep-inducing”.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 received a less-than-impressive 49% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which may not have helped the film’s fortunes at the box office. The film grossed just $24 million against a reported $50-100 million budget.
Costner, who partly financed the four-part series out of his own pocket, recently responded to the film’s disappointing reception by insisting he was “pleased” with the results.
“I’ve lived with movies and what happens to them on opening weekend,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly.
“If we put too much pressure on that, we’re bound to be disappointed. I’m really happy that Horizon looks like what it’s supposed to look like, and that’s how it’s going to look like for the rest of its life. And that was really important to me in this process.”
Last month, the sequel to the Western, which was set to hit US theaters today (August 16), was delayed following the disappointing debut of the first film. A new release date has yet to be announced.
Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is available to rent and buy on digital retailers now and will be available on Max on August 23.
