Charles Shaughnessy has given The Nanny fans hope that a reboot of the classic sitcom may be on the way.
In an interview with Today Extra this week, the 66-year-old actor, who plays Maxwell Sheffield on the series, said his former co-star and show creator Fran Drescher, 63, has ideas ‘ genius’ for a new series.
‘There are a few ideas I’ve heard around. One of them she came up with was a bit of a genius,’ he said.
‘If it can be pulled together and have lots of different fibers involved then I can absolutely see it working.’
Charles admits that a reboot isn’t always easy to pull off, but he believes Fran’s idea of an updated series could work.
“Restarting is always difficult because everything has moved on,” he said.
‘But if you could find a way to put those characters as they were but now 25 years later in a similar framework of Miss Fine creating chaos for the long-suffering Maxwell then it could work. And this idea may be due to that.
‘I’m holding my breath with everyone to see if it works.’
Last year, the cast of The Nanny – which ran for six seasons from 1993 to 1999, recreated their pilot episode with a special virtual Pandemic Table Reading.
In attendance are stars Fran, Charles, Daniel Davis (butler/chauffeur Niles), Lauren Lane (CC Babcock, Max’s business partner) and Rachel Chagall (Fran’s BFF Val.)
There’s also Renee Taylor, the 87-year-old actress who plays Fran’s mother, Sylvia.
And of course there are the children – Maggie, Brighton and Grace – played by Nicholle Tom, Benjamin Salisbury and Madeline Zima.
Supporting players Jonathan Penner (Fran’s ex Danny), guest stars Alex Sternin (Eddie), Dee Dee Rescher (Dotty), introduction singer Ann Hampton Callaway and co-showrunner Peter Marc Jacobson also participate.
