Who Made Howie Mandel ‘Giggle’ on America’s Got Talent?

Howie Mandel is back as a judge on NBC’s hit show America’s Got Talent, joining Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howard Stern at the judges’ table. Mandel blogs for usevery week, revealing his insider’s take on the contestants, the judging process, and his favorite AGT moments.

This week was a rollercoaster. It had more ups and downs than any other week prior. This week, the word I have is pride—in myself! I called it just like I knew America would. I said exactly who was going to go through, and there’s tape to prove it!

First, Cami Bradley was brilliant and beautiful and is a star. She looked like a star, sounded like a star, and is a star.

As for Timber Brown—he embodies what the show is all about. It’s about variety, and not only did he perform a feat of strength and athleticism, but also danger. He was the guy who turned the entire evening around. Once he came out, the show ramped up to another level. And that’s what he did, and that’s what I said, and that’s the first person the audience responded to, and that’s why he’s going to see more of America’s Got Talent.

And then there’s Jimmy Rose, who I think is a wonderfully talented singer. It was a no-brainer. I didn’t even have to listen to him; on paper, he was going to go through. I got slammed a bit yesterday for sounding like I’m taking something away from his talent, but ultimately, you know how America’s going to respond. And when you have a sweet guy who can sing, America is going to fall in love and put him through.

There are people balancing 30 feet in the air and coming close to death who aren’t going go through because they’re not that sweet, loveable country guy who can sing.

For example, Aerial Ice does an amazing mash-up of two iconic American forms of entertainment, ice skating and the circus. Combining the two was beautiful and certainly entertaining. But nobody knows any of their names—nobody knows who they are and what they stand for.

But if you take a nice young country boy who serves his country, is wonderfully humble and is a nice kid who can sing, he will win over that death-defying mash-up every day.

Finally, there’s comedian Taylor Williamson. Taylor is my personal favorite right now. I don’t know that he can win the contest, but he makes me laugh. He walks out on stage and delivers exactly what he’s supposed to deliver.

As I said to Heidi, you can’t specifically judge material. That’s like saying to a singer, ‘You’re a phenomenal singer, but I don’t like that song.’ So you can’t say, ‘You’re a great funny, awkward, lovable guy, but I don’t like that joke.’ I think that he is a great comedic character, and even when he’s just talking and not doing his material.

For some reason, Taylor just has to stand there—I don’t even have to like the joke. His awkward craziness just makes me smile, makes me giggle. Laughter is the best medicine, and this week we took our medicine!
