Bridgerton season three is out and Ton is buzzing with gossip about the tumultuous love lives of the most eligible Lords and Ladies. It’s a delight that Sam Phillips, who plays the new Lord Alfred Debling, has given viewers the kind of insight Lady Whistledown could only wish for. The actor has shared some behind-the-scenes information about the friendships, night shoots and mansions that fill the cast’s days as they get to work on the new season of the Netflix hit show.
Indeed, you may be wondering who Lord Debling actually is. Well, Sam Phillips has shared plenty of photos of himself wearing Bridgerton’s new bachelorette outfit. Dressed in a wool coat and top hat, Lord Debling is hoping to win the heart of Penelope Featherington, played by fan favourite Nicola Coughlan.
It’s no spoiler to say that season three of Bridgerton focuses on the budding romance between Penelope and Luke Newton’s Colin Bridgerton, but it’s taken a while for the third Bridgerton sibling to get his act together. As Penelope and Colin slowly warm up to their relationship, Lord Debling – a botanist and conservationist – spends a lot of time talking about all things gardening with Penelope.
Sam Phillips is no stranger to royal drama himself: the 39-year-old played the Queen’s Equerry in The Crown and has also starred in Grantchester, The Syndicate and Covid-era political documentary This England. He’s clearly at home on the Bridgerton set. In fact, rumours have been circulating in the Ton that Sam is dating his co-star, Bessie Carter, who plays Prudence. The pair have been photographed at various events, with Bessie often bringing her mother along. Which is pretty cool – even if her mother isn’t legendary actress Imelda Staunton. Another connection between Sam and one of TV’s most royal shows.

There are plenty of photos of Sam with Barbie star Nicola as the pair don iconic Regency-era outfits and get into character on set. One photo shows Nicola in a stunning blue dress – and Penelope’s outfits were crucial to her character’s development this season, costume designer John Glaser told the BBC. He said she went through a ‘change’ between seasons two and three. Gone is the ‘youthful and insecure’ bright yellow and green of Penelope Featherington. Now, as her confidence grows, we can expect to see Bridgerton’s most passionate gossiper in darker colors and softer tones.
