The Office Spinoff Plot Details Reveal Key Connection To Original Series

New details on The Office spinoff have finally been revealed, with a key connection to the past uncovered as the project moves forward at Peacock. It was reported late last year that a reboot was in the works from Greg Daniels, who developed the U.S. version of the comedy. It’s been confirmed more recently that the reboot will star The White Lotus season 2’s Sabrina Impacciatore and Ex-Machina actor Domhnall Gleeson. Daniels has also clarified that the story would take place within the same world as the popular NBC comedy led by Steve Carrell.

Now, according to TVLine, new information about the plot reveals what the connection will be. Along with the news that The Office reboot has been ordered to series at Peacock, the first story details reveal that the new mockumentary-style series is set in the same universe as the NBC version of The OfficeIt’ll bring back the documentary crew that chronicled the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin, but they’re in search of a new subject.

What Else Do The Plot Details Reveal About The Office Reboot?

It’ll Follow A Midwestern Newspaper

They discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.

The official synopsis reveals more about the focus of the forthcoming reboot. It’ll begin with the same documentary crew from the Steve Carrell series. Described as tireless and intrepid, “the documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch” finds itself in search of a new subject to focus on. That’s when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.

With production set to begin in July, the new reboot is co-created by Daniels and Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman. The duo also executive produce alongside the team behind the original U.K. version of The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas (formerly Reveille). are also producers on the project. The reboot hails from Universal Television, one of the studios behind the American version of The Office.

Although it’s still early days on The Office reboot, it might be the case that the premise will lend itself to a meta, winking commentary about the dangers of trying to recapture old magic. As it currently stands, no former cast members have yet been announced as reprising their roles. But considering the connective tissue between the two shows, that’s a clear possibility.
