Every Main Character’s Age in The Office

Despite having ended almost a decade ago, The Office is still one of the funniest and most watched sitcoms. As it follows a group of characters working together at a paper company, the cast goes from people in their 20s, like Jim and Pam, to people around 70 years old, like Creed.

Most characters in The Office are still figuring things out, especially the main characters, as they’re in their 20s and 30s. Funny enough, there is plenty of information about most of the characters’ exact birthdays, so people can know how old their favorite The Office characters are and even their zodiac signs.

Updated on August 12, 2024, by Andrea Sandoval: Few characters on television have become as iconic as the ones leading The Office. Despite its large cast, people are familiar with every character in the series. We updated this article to include even more The Office characters and their ages.

Erin Hannon Was Very Young

Erin Hannon talking to the camera in The Office.
  • Erin Hannon was born on May 1, 1986, which means Erin was 22 in the fifth season when she was introduced, and 27 in the last season of The Office.

When Pam quits her job as a Dunder Mifflin receptionist, they replace her with Erin Hannon (played by Ellie Kemper). Erin is young, charming, and naive. Suffice it to say, she’s not the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree, but this might be because she was only 22 years old when she started working at the paper company.

Ellie develops quite a romance with Andy Bernard, who is 13 years older than her and already 35 years old by the time Erin arrives at the office. However, their relationship ends after he goes on his boat trip in Season 9 and starts dating the new kind and sweet employee, Pete.

Robert California Replaces Michael Scott for a While

Robert California looking judgmental in The Office.
  • Robert California was born on February 7, 1960, which means he was 50 years old in the seventh season when the character was introduced, and 51 years old when he left The Office in its eighth season.

Portrayed by James Spader, Robert California is one of the main characters in the eighth season of The Office. He obtains the CEO position in Dunder Mifflin and becomes the new eccentric boss of the company. Robert has an intense personality and an air of wisdom, but in the end, he lacks just as much common sense as Michael Scott.

Being the boss, it makes sense that Robert is a middle-aged man. He has been married at least three times and has a young son, Bert, who is around 10 years old. However, it’s clear that Robert hasn’t matured at all, but he knows exactly how to get what he wants. In the end, when David Wallace buys Dunder Mifflin, Robert convinces him to donate a million dollars to a charity for college girls in developing countries; the whole thing sounds incredibly shady.

Stanley Hudson Is One of the Funniest Characters in The Office

Stanley Hudson in The Office, doing a crossword.
  • Stanley Hudson was born on July 14, 1951, which means Stanley was 54 at the beginning of The Office and 61 in the last season.

Stanley spent a lot of time working at Dunder Mifflin, and it is clear that by the time the series begins, he is already done with everything and everyone, especially when it comes to Michael Scott. Stanley is a good, reliable salesman, and he isn’t one to be involved in the office’s shenanigans.

Stanley was married, but after an affair, it is unclear if he was still with his wife. He has a young daughter and keeps her picture on his desk — until Michael makes a highly inappropriate comment. In the end, Stanley retires to Florida, where he pursues a wood carving hobby, so all ends well for good ol’ Stanley.

Phyllis Vance Is a Sweet Character

Phyllis Vance in The Office.
  • Phyllis Vance was born on July 10, 1965, which means Phyllis was 40 at the beginning of The Office and 47 in the last season.

Phyllis Lapin is later known as Phyllis Vance once she gets married to Bob Vance, Vance Rerigeration. She is not as old as people think. Phyllis has a serious and quiet personality with a conservative fashion, but as she remarks all the time, she is the same age as Michael.

Despite Phyllis’s introverted nature, she has a gossipy side and likes talking with the other members of the office. However, she endures many humiliations thanks to Michael, who sees her as an old grandma. Phyllis leaves Dunder Mifflin after the ninth season of The Office and opens a knitting store after reuniting with her long-lost daughter.

Toby Flenderson Never Had a Happy Life

  • Toby Flenderson was born on February 22, 1963, which means Toby was 42 at the beginning of The Office and 49 in the last season.

Likely no one who has watched The Office would believe Toby is only two years older than Michael. Toby is a solemn, quiet man who tries to keep order in the office, but most of the time, Michael sabotages him. He also has a tense relationship with Michael, who resents him because Toby, as an HR representative, has to keep Michael in check.

Toby had the worst luck throughout The Office. He got divorced, he had a terrible time at Dunder Mifflin, and he didn’t seem to have any friends. Furthermore, Toby is fired in the last season after the documentary airs, so he quite literally ends up having nothing. Some people believe Toby was Scranton’s Strangler.

Kelly Kapoor Is One of the Youngest Workers at Dunder Mifflin

  • Kelly Kapoor was born on February 5, 1980, which means Kelly was 25 at the beginning of The Office and 34 in the last season.

One of The Office‘s writers, Mindy Kaling, portrayed Kelly Kapoor as Dunder Mifflin’s Customer Service Representative. Kelly was the youngest character in the main cast, and she was often caught up in a toxic on-and-off relationship with Ryan Howard. The character left in the ninth season when Kaling started her own show, The Mindy Project.

Kelly leaves The Office when she moves to Ohio with her boyfriend, Ravi. However, she still appears in the ninth season as a guest character. Nine years later, Kelly is still figuring things out, and the show makes it pretty clear that Kelly cheats on Ravi with Ryan, so that relationship also doesn’t get any better.

Kevin Malone is Older Than People Think

Kevin Malone holding money and looking smug in The Office
  • Kevin Malon was born on June 1, 1961, which means Kevin was 43 at the beginning of The Office and 52 in the last season.

Despite his youthful personality, Kevin is already in his forties at the beginning of The Office. Kevin is Dunder Mifflin’s accountant, but he is not very good at his job. In fact, Angela and Oscar are always covering for him. Still, Kevin is an affable and charming character that earned the hearts of the viewers.

At the end of The Office, Dwight fires Kevin because he has made too many mistakes in his books, having invented a number called “keleven.” However, it is later revealed that Kevin opened his own bar, and he forgives Dwight for firing him, so it seems that all is going well for Kevin after all.

Ryan Howard’s Journey at Dunder Mifflin Was a Roller Coaster

  • Ryan Howard was born on May 5, 1979, which means Ryan was 26 at the beginning of The Office and 35 in the last season.

One of the younger characters of The Officetogether with Kelly, Ryan, is 26 years old when he starts working as an intern at Dunder Mifflin. Despite his low-level role in the company, Ryan quickly climbs to the top, becoming the Vice President of North Eastern Sales, Jan’s previous job.

However, Ryan makes a lot of mistakes, and he’s eventually not only fired but also arrested for fraud. Funny enough, Ryan is later on hired by Michael for his own paper company, and then Michael also gets David Wallace to get Ryan his old intern position back. At the end of The Office, Ryan runs away with Kelly and abandons his baby son, Drake, at Dwight’s wedding.

Darryl Philbin Started as a Recurrent Character in The Office

  • Darryl Philbin was born on October 25, 1971, which means Darryl was 33 at the beginning of The Office and 42 in the last season.

In the first season of The OfficeDarryl is 33 years old and works as the warehouse foreman of Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch. Since he didn’t work in the office with the rest of the main characters, Darryl was a recurrent character who often appeared when Michael or the others had business at the warehouse.

Darryl becomes one of the starring characters in the fourth season of The Office. He even moves to an office with the rest of the characters when he’s promoted to a managing role. In the end, Darryl quits Dunder Mifflin to work as the V.P. of Athlead Relations with Jim.

Dwight Schrute Accomplished a Lot in the Series

  • Dwight Schrute was born on January 20, 1970, which means Dwight was 35 at the beginning of The Office and 44 in the last season.

While Dwight was 35 in the first season of The Office, he’s never been the most level-headed character. Dwight takes his job very seriously, but he doesn’t have critical thinking. He follows Michael’s instructions without considering the consequences and has a one-sided rivalry with Jim.

However, Dwight grows a lot throughout the nine seasons of The Office. In the end, Dwight realizes his true feelings for Angela and marries her. He also finally becomes Dunder Mifflin’s Regional Manager, and Dwight and Jim develop a wholesome friendship. Dwight was 44 by the end of the last season.

Angela Martin Lived Like She Was Older Than She Was

  • Angela Martin was born on November 11, 1974, which means Angela was 30 at the beginning of The Office and 39 in the last season.

With only 30 years in the first season of The Office, Angela is one of the youngest characters in the show. However, she doesn’t get along with Jim, Pam, Kelly, or Ryan because Angela has a stern personality. Angela is a hard pill to swallow, but people still root for her and Dwight until the end.

Angela was the Senior Accountant and Dunder Mifflin, and she was one of the few competent employees in The Office. However, she often lacked common sense and ended up in an absurd love triangle with Dwight and Andy. Still, Angela turned the plane around and eventually formed a sweet family with Dwight.

Andy Bernard Was Highly Ambitious

  • Andy Bernard was born on January 24, 1973, which means Andy was 35 in his first appearance on The Office and 41 in the last season.

Andy Bernard, or as he likes to be called, the “Nard Dog,” is a character introduced in the third season of The Office when Jim works for the Stamford branch of Dunder Mifflin. He became a Salesman at Stranton and a regular character in The Office when the Stamford branch was permanently closed.

Andy isn’t a particularly good salesman, but he manages to become Regional Manager for a while. However, Andy quits Dunder Mifflin to pursue an acting career. This doesn’t work out, but thanks to a viral video of him crying, Andy eventually finds a good job at Cornell’s Admissions Office.

Jim Halpert Made a Name For Himself

  • Jim Halpert was born on February 18, 1978, which means Jim was 27 at the beginning of The Office and 36 in the last season.

Despite his immature personality in earlier seasons, Jim is already in his late 20s by the start of The Office. Even though Jim didn’t take his job too seriously, he was an outstanding salesman. However, he never truly did climb the ladder at Dunder Mifflin, aside from a brief time when he was Regional Co-Manager together with Michael.

Throughout the seasons of The Office, the audience sees Jim grow into a level-headed, responsible man. He gets married to Pam, and they have two children, Cecilia and Philip. This led Jim to take his career more seriously, and he founded Athlead, where he worked as the president of New Acquisitions.

Pam Beesly Had a Whole Life at Dunder Mifflin

  • Pam Beesly was born on March 25, 1979, which means Pam was 26 at the beginning of The Office and 35 in the last season.

Pam Beesly is one of the characters with the best development in The Office. She begins the series being 26 years old and Dunder Mifflin’s receptionist. She finds her passion in the arts and pursues studies in this area. However, she continues to work at Dunder Mifflin as a Sales Representative and, later on, as the Office Administrator — a role she invented herself.

After marrying Jim and forming a family, Jim and Pam decide to move to Austin, Texas, so Jim can continue working with Athlead. According to the NBC website dedicated to The Office, Pam became a successful muralist and merged her business with an art gallery, so she finally achieved her dream of becoming an artist.

Michael Scott Got Everything He Ever Wanted

  • Michael Scott was born on March 15, 1965, which means Michael was 40 at the beginning of The Office and 49 in the last season.

Arguably, the main character in The Office, Michael Scott, is already 40 years old in the first season. This makes sense, as Michael had already worked at Dunder Mifflin for a while. He started as a Sales Representative for the company and eventually was promoted to Regional Manager when his boss, Ed Truck, retired.

Michael was irresponsible and ignorant, but no one cared more about Dunder Mifflin than he did — except, perhaps, Dwight. However, when Michael had the opportunity to follow the love of his life, he realized that there were more important things than selling paper. He married Holly and had the happy family he always wanted.
