The Office may soon be back in business.
For years, there have been rumors of the American version of The Office getting revived, but no real progress had been made on the potential project. Per Deadline, a new report on Saturday divulged that Greg Daniels, who adapted the series based on the original British version, was now actively working on a new show set in the same world as The Office. According to the report, Daniels is now setting up a writers’ room with some of his most trusted writers to start fleshing out ideas for a new sequel series. As it’s still very early in development, there’s not much that is yet known about the planned revival, but some details have been revealed.
The show is planned to be set in the same universe as its predecessor, but it will likely be set in an all-new office with a different cast. It’s not yet clear if the new cast of characters will also be Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees, or if the new show will focus on an entirely different kind of office as well. Daniels has also stated that the show could focus on a documentary crew focusing on a different subject, so it’s also possible that the new series may not even be set in a traditional office. EIther way, setting the new show in the same world would also keep the door open for special appearances from fan favorites in the previous series.
The Office Was a Tremendous Hit
The Office was a big hit in the United States, running for nine seasons between 2005 and 2013. The mockumentary series imagined a documentary crew filming the everyday happenings of a paper company’s office in Scranton, Pennsylvania, managed by eccentric boss Michael Scott (Steve Carell). The show’s ensemble cast also included Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute), John Krasinski (Jim Halpert), Jenna Fischer (Pamela Beesly-Halpert), Ed Helms (Andy Bernard), B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard), Leslie David Baker (Stanley Hudson), Kate Flannery (Meredith Palmer), Brian Baumgartner (Kevin Malone), Oscar Nunez (Oscar Martinez), Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin), and Phyllis Smith (Phyllis Vance).
NBCUniversal TV and streaming chairman Susan Rovner previously said how much interest there was at the company to revisit The Office. At the time, she said it was mostly up to Daniels and how he’d want to approach the new show. As Rovner told THR in 2023, “Whatever Greg Daniels wants to do, I’m standing by with open arms.”
