The Office’s Greg Daniels Recruits Nathan For You Co-Creator for Potential Sequel Series

A major development has been revealed for the planned continuation of The Office.

Based on the original UK series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office was a tremendous success in the United States, running for nine seasons on NBC from 2005 to 2013. There have been reports of the creator of the U.S. adaptation Greg Daniels, moving forward with a new series set in the world of The Office. Per Deadline, it’s now been revealed that Nathan For You co-creator Michael Koman has partnered up with Daniels to help develop the new series. While not officially greenlit at this time, the potential show will be co-created by Daniels and Koman if it moves forward.

The series would not be a full-on reboot, nor will it necessarily be a revival. It is expected to be set in the same universe as the previous version of the series, but with a new cast of characters introduced. No details have been revealed about any particular characters for the new show, or if it would again be a Dunder Mifflin Paper Company office, or another business entirely.

Koman Has Mockumentary Experience

Koman is coming into the project with mockumentary experience. Alongside Nathan Fielder, he co-created the acclaimed comedy series Nathan For You, which spanned four seasons on Comedy Central. The show followed Fielder attempting to help struggling businesses by suggesting outlandish strategies with varying results. Koman and Daniels also both happen to have formerly worked for Saturday Night Live as writers, and the connections don’t end there – Koman is also married to Ellie Kemper, one of the stars of Daniels’ The Office.

If the new series is set in the same world, that would mean that the door is still open for special appearances from characters in the original series. The original show featured a strong ensemble cast with many fan favorites, so there would not be a shortage of familiar characters to bring back if that’s the route taken with the new series. Steve Carell famously led the cast as aloof boss Michael Scott before departing in Season 7, though he did make a special appearance in the series finale. The show’s beloved cast members also include John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, Jenna Fischer, Mindy Kaling, Leslie David Baker, Melora Hardin, Kate Flannery, Brian Baumgartner, Ed Helms, Oscar Nuñez, Creed Bratton, Angela Kinsey, Phyllis Smith, Ellie Kemper, Craig Robinson, and Paul Lieberstein.

Episodes of The Office are currently streaming on Peacock.
