Grey’s Anatomy continues casting talented stars as Sophia Bush joins the ABC medical drama in season 21, and the actress’ appearance will help redeem her former show’s premature cancelation. Bush is most known for her role as Brooke Davis in One Tree Hill, a part she played in all nine seasons of the teen drama, from 2003 to 2012. However, Bush is also recognized for portraying Erin Lindsay in Chicago PD two years after One Tree Hill‘s ending. Following her time on Chicago PD, though, Bush was cast in another series, but it didn’t experience the same success as her other projects.
Nevertheless, Bush is still an accomplished actress, both on the small and big screen. Some of Bush’s best movies include John Tucker Must Die and Pixar’s Incredibles 2. Now, she is set to star in season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy, one of the longest-running scripted primetime shows currently airing on TV, as it has over 430 episodes under its belt. Hopefully, Bush’s role in Grey’s Anatomy can make up for the unfortunate fate of her last medical drama series.
Sophia Bush Joins The Cast Of Grey’s Anatomy Season 21
Bush Plays Dr. Cass Beckman
According to Deadline, Sophia Bush has been cast to play a new character in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 — Dr. Cass Beckman. The actress’ role is being described as one of a “major recurring” nature. Bush’s first episode as Cass is scheduled for Thursday, November 7, which will be the sixth one of the season, meaning the show will evidently take a one-week break after episode 5 on October 24 due to Halloween.
Cass’ character description reveals that she is ‘amiable, fun, and a little messy around the edges.’
Bush’s character, Cass, is a trauma surgeon at Seattle Presbyterian Hospital, while her husband, Dr. David Beckham is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. It’s unclear how the new Grey’s Anatomy season 21 character will factor into the story, especially since she doesn’t work at Grey Sloan. However, Cass’ character description reveals that she is “amiable, fun, and a little messy around the edges.” Other than that, though, nothing else is known about Bush’s role in Grey’s Anatomy season 21.
Bush’s Return To The Medical Drama Genre Can Make Up For Good Sam’s Cancelation
CBS Canceled Good Sam After Only 1 Season
Sophia Bush’s role in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 won’t be the first time she’s playing a doctor on TV. The actress previously starred as Dr. Sam Griffith, one of the two main characters in the show Good Sam. CBS’s medical drama created by Katie Wech premiered in January 2022 and aired for 13 episodes on the network before its season 1 finale debuted in May. Unfortunately, the episode turned out to double as the series finale as CBS canceled Good Sam shortly after season 1 concluded. So, perhaps Bush joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy can redeem Good Sam‘s cancelation.
Good Sam was supposed to be the actress’ grand return to network TV after Bush left Chicago PD after season 4 in 2017. It had been almost five years since Bush had held a leading role in a series, and Good Sam should have been her next big success. Instead, the medical drama epically failed and could not last past its first season. By joining the cast of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, though, Bush can make up for Good Sam‘s shortcomings. With her new role as Dr. Cass Beckham, Bush can prove how well she can play a TV doctor.
Why Bush’s Good Sam Was Canceled
Good Sam Had Low Ratings
The reason for Good Sam‘s cancelation was very simple — its ratings were subpar. Despite receiving decent reviews, the CBS medical drama failed to gain traction with its audience, averaging around 2.2 million viewers per episode. Not even an episode featuring the reunion between Sophia Bush and her former One Tree Hill costars, Hilarie Burton Morgan and Bethany Joy Lenz, could save Good Sam‘s poor ratings.
Good Sam Cast | Role |
---|---|
Sophia Bush | Dr. Sam Griffith |
Jason Isaacs | Dr. Rob “Griff” Griffith |
Skye P. Marshall | Dr. Lex Trulie |
Michael Stahl-David | Dr. Caleb Tucker |
Omar Maskati | Dr. Isan M. Shah |
Wendy Crewson | Vivian Katz |
Edwin Hodge | Malcolm A. Kingsley |
Davi Santos | Dr. Joey Costa |
Good Sam was ultimately the lowest-rated scripted series of the season for CBS, making the decision to cancel the show quite easy. Its termination could have been seen from a mile away. However, even though Good Sam was a failure for Bush, it won’t stop her from taking on roles in the medical drama genre, like Dr. Cass Beckham in the cast of Grey’s Anatomy season 21.
