A major shake-up is coming to Lanford! Fans of The Conners will notice a big change this fall, as legacy cast member Michael Fishman, who has played DJ Conner since the early days of Roseanne, will not be returning for Season 5.
What Happened to DJ?
Fishman’s departure marks the end of an era for the beloved character. While there are currently no plans for DJ to appear in Season 5, the door remains open for his return in the future.
Though Fishman was a series regular during The Conners’ first four seasons, DJ appeared in just 36 of the show’s 71 episodes. Behind the scenes, Fishman contributed even more, directing five episodes of the hit ABC comedy.
What About Mary?
Fans of DJ’s family can rest easy—his daughter, Mary, portrayed by Jayden Rey, will still be a part of the show. Initially reported as being downgraded to a guest star, ABC has clarified that Rey will remain a series regular in Season 5.
A Bittersweet Goodbye
Fishman’s absence comes as The Conners continues to evolve. DJ’s wife, Geena (played by Maya Lynne Robinson), left after Season 1 for a role on The Unicorn and has only made a brief return since. With DJ now stepping away, his presence will be missed at the Conner family table.
A Look Back at DJ’s Journey
Michael Fishman first joined Roseanne in its second episode, replacing the original DJ actor Sal Barone after the pilot. Over the years, audiences watched Fishman grow from a child actor to an integral part of the Conner family. His return in the 2018 revival brought a wave of nostalgia, cementing his legacy within the series.
Season 5: Who’s Still in Lanford?
Season 5 will see the return of series regulars John Goodman (Dan), Laurie Metcalf (Jackie), Sara Gilbert (Darlene), Lecy Goranson (Becky), Emma Kenney (Harris), Ames McNamara (Mark), Jayden Rey (Mary), and Jay R. Ferguson (Ben). Katey Sagal will also reprise her recurring role as Louise, Dan’s second wife.
When Does Season 5 Premiere?
Mark your calendars! The Conners Season 5 kicks off on Wednesday, September 21, at a new time—8/7c.
