Twilight Saga Relationships As Taylor Swift Songs

From soulmates to unrequited crushes, Taylor Swift has love songs for each of these Twilight Saga relationships.
Taylor Swift has proven herself to be one of the most relatable modern-day artists. From being the other woman to perfect romances to desperately pining over someone, her songs capture a variety of experiences in love and heartbreak. As such, her songs perfectly encapsulate many relationships from the beloved supernatural teen series: The Twilight Saga.

Stephenie Meyer’s The Twilight Saga became a global phenomenon with its vampire-human-werewolf love triangle and exemplification of young adult tropes. It also displayed a plethora of relationships – some healthy, others very toxic, some completely nonsensical, but all able to be summed up by Taylor Swift’s range of lyrics.

Rosalie & Emmett – “Call It What You Want”

Even as a human, Rosalie Hale was always “in love with the idea of love.” She chased after hopes for an ideal marriage and longed for a happy, loving family life like that of her best friend, Vera. Unfortunately, her dreams remained unfulfilled as a human, and also as a vampire – until she saved Emmett.
“You don’t need to save me / But would you run away with me?” Taylor sings as she details a hurt, guarded woman finding love and healing in her new partner. Like Taylor’s narrator, Rosalie is independent and tough but finds in Emmett someone worth reviving her soft ideals of love and marriage for.

Alice & Jasper – “Invisible String”

With this song, Swift muses how she and her partner were always fated to meet, tied together by an invisible string. Given Alice’s ability to see the future, this song fits her relationship with Jasper beautifully. Even more so considering the fact that she saw him coming, but had to wait.

Jasper, who goes on to become one of Twilight’s most powerful vampires, was still living a dark, brutal life with Maria. Just as Taylor sings about going through hardships to reach her partner, his connection to Alice was the string that pulled him “out of all the wrong arms” into that diner; something that wrapped all of his past mistakes, chained his demons, and tied him to her forever.

Carlise & Esme – “Lover”

As two of Twilight’s most likable characters, Carlisle and Esme have one of the purest, healthiest relationships within the series. Their love story is also one of the most tragically romantic of the Cullen coven, who view them as a pillar of support and guidance on how to navigate life and their relationships. The two are described as being deeply in love, even all these years since their initial spark.

This is why this Taylor track is the perfect song for Carlisle and Esme. Detailing a safe, happy relationship full of understanding, sincerity, and unabashed love, “Lover” accurately describes the pair’s devotion to each other.

Mike & Bella – “Teardrops On My Guitar”

Taylor croons about being absolutely enamored with a friend who is clearly in love with someone else, fitting Mike’s feelings for Bella to a tee. Just as the protagonist of Taylor’s song keeps yearning for Drew’s affection, despite him being oblivious to how much he means to her, Mike too is constantly holding out for Bella.
Eventually, Mike is faced with no choice but to move on, much like putting Drew’s picture down and trying to get some sleep at night. Knowing that he’ll have to live without everything Edward has, Mike finally learns to put himself above his feelings and keep faking a smile for Bella.

Jessica & Mike – “Hey Stephen (Taylor’s Version)”

This line may as well have been Jessica Stanley’s journal entry for Mike Newton. While Mike was busy always pining for Bella, Jessica had a major crush on Mike and was constantly vying for his attention.
“You’re perfect for me / Why aren’t you here tonight?” expertly captures Jessica’s longing for Mike and subsequent jealousy at his attention towards Bella. Just like Taylor’s Stephen, Mike seems to be clueless about how much he means to this girl who is infatuated with him. Luckily, they do presumably get their happy ending.

Sam & Leah – “Don’t You (Taylor’s Version)”

Sam and Leah’s relationship was one of the saddest in the series. There was no real falling out or reason for their breakup, other than Sam imprinting on Emily. Despite the imprinting being out of his control, it didn’t negate the fact that his intense feelings for Emily left Leah alone and heartbroken in the dust.

Just as in this song, Leah can’t bring herself to hate Sam, but it is insufferable for her to constantly see the two of them together and not have a way to escape it, being a member of Sam’s pack. She doesn’t need his sympathy and pity to add to her pain.

Charlie & Sue – Begin Again (Taylor’s Version)

In this hopeful track, Taylor sings about finding someone new who appreciates the parts of her that her previous partner never did, fitting Charlie’s relationship with Sue. While Bella’s parents kept a civil relationship, it’s mentioned that Renee left because she did not wholly appreciate Charlie and the small-town life he chose to lead.

Despite this, Charlie never forfeits his belief in love and marriage as a whole. He later finds in Sue Clearwater a companion who matches his energy and understands him and his life in a way Renee never did; she is also there to help him navigate the new supernatural components to it. With Sue, Charlie sees love begin again.

Edward & Jacob – Look What You Made Me Do

Although they eventually become in-laws, Edward and Jacob start off as bitter rivals fighting for Bella’s love. While Edward acknowledges Jacob’s importance in Bella’s life and his hand in helping her cope with his absence in New Moon, Jacob remains hostile and bitter toward Bella’s choice, right up until he imprints on her daughter.
Given the fact that Edward is also a vampire, Jacob has ample reason to despise Edward and openly does so. He even blames Edward and his vampire clan for much of the pain in Bella’s life and the course of his own actions. As such, Taylor’s unabashed track about rivalry adeptly sums up Jacob’s animosity towards the other supernatural boy.

Jacob & Bella – You Belong With Me (Taylor’s Version)

While his love for Bella was initially very sweet and innocent, after his transformation and Bella’s decision to turn Jacob became impatient and determined to make Bella confess her feelings for him. Bella and Jacob’s relationship often made fans cringe. In Jacob’s opinion, he was the better of the two suitors, stating that life “would be as easy as breathing” with him.

Having been her childhood friend and the one to console her in Edward’s absence, Jacob sees himself as getting Bella in a way the polar opposite vampire can’t. Taylor’s “You Belong With Me” is the perfect anthem for Jacob’s mentality.

Bella & Edward – I’m Only Me When I’m With You

Just as Bella struggled to relate to people in general, Edward too found himself distinct from those around him. Perhaps this is why their relationship became so codependent once they came together: having finally found some meaning and belonging, they were unable to imagine a happy, healthy life without the other in it.
Inseparable and irrevocably in love, both Edward and Bella credit the other for being their reason for living and only feel truly like themselves when they’re together. This is superbly reflected in Taylor’s song that may as well have been written for these two angsty lovers.
