Lady Whistledown Would Be Proud! As filming for season 3 of Bridgerton begins, Luke Newton, Nicola Coughlan, and the rest of the cast have been giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at the beloved period drama. “Bridgerton season 3 has officially started filming,” the Derry Girls alum teased in a July 2022 Instagram video shared by most of her co-stars. In the clip, Coughlan — in full hair and makeup but wearing sweatpants — invites Newton to join her for a carriage ride, a reference to the steamy moment the pair shared in the book Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. “Are you in?” she asks, and her on-screen love interest grins. “Let’s go,” Newton replied with a smirk, before climbing in and closing the door behind him.
The highly anticipated third season of the period drama will focus on Coughlan and Newton’s characters, Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton, and their love story. “Season 3 follows Penelope Featherington as she finally lets go of her feelings for Colin Bridgerton after hearing him disparage her to his friends last season,” Netflix’s official synopsis for the show reveals. “Instead, she focuses on finding a husband who respects her independence so she can continue her double life as Lady Whistledown, away from her mother and sisters. However, her lack of confidence means her search doesn’t go smoothly.” However, according to a press release shared by the streaming service in July 2022, Colin will be “discouraged to learn that Penelope, the only person who has ever appreciated him for who he is, has turned cold toward him.
” He’ll do everything he can to try to win back her friendship—even trying to “boost her confidence to attract” the perfect husband. Through all his efforts, however, Colin will be forced to figure out “what his true feelings for his friend really are.” With Penelope and Colin’s relationship now the focus of season 3, Coughlan previously confessed that she was a little apprehensive about making the transition from supporting role to new female lead. “I mean, it’s both exciting and terrifying,” the Irish actress told Digital Spy in March 2022. “I think because when I signed up for the show, because it’s based on the books, I knew that her love story was going to come at some point, but it felt like it was a moment in the very distant future. And I already knew her love interest, which is Colin Bridgerton.” She continued: “Luke and I, we used to joke about it all the time, and then it gradually became less funny and more terrifying over time.
[But] I was really interested in how it would play out because she’s quite modern in a lot of ways, she’s a businesswoman. She’s incredibly serious about her career, but she also wants love, she also wants a marriage that she wants.” Two months later, she echoed those sentiments when speaking to E! News, shortly after it was officially confirmed that her character would be at the center of season 3.
“I found out, like, two weeks after shooting season 2, so I had a lot of time to adjust to it,” she said in May 2022, joking that being upgraded from a supporting character to the female lead was a little “scary.” “But then, you know, last night when they said, ‘The news is coming out. You can talk about it,’ I was like, ‘I don’t want to. I’m too scared.’ When I said it [out loud], it made it real,” Coughlan added.
