‘Bridgerton’ Season 2: Why We Want to See Kate Sharma, Francesca Bridgerton, Newton, and More
Netflix hasn’t ordered Bridgerton for Season 2 yet, but that doesn’t mean fans — and the show’s stars — aren’t dreaming about what they’d like to see next on the Shondaland series. Since Bridgerton is based on the best-selling series of novels by romance author Julia Quinn, we already have a pretty good idea of what a potential Season 2 will look like. Well, sort of. That’s because Bridgerton author Chris Van Dusen and his team have expanded the boundaries of Quinn’s Regency world, planting the seeds for storylines that wouldn’t have come up for years in the book timeline and introducing original characters who fit perfectly into the “upper class.”
**SPOILERS FOR BRIDGERTON SEASON 1 AND THE JULIA QUINN NOVEL**
So who exactly can we expect to see in season two of Bridgerton? Well, there are just a ton—no pun intended—of new characters, from the Sheffield sisters from Book 2 to the Smythe-Smiths, who have appeared in later novels and have their own spinoff series. Thanks to Bridgerton Season 1 introducing us to Book 5 characters Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker) and Sir Philip Crane (Chris Fulton) long before Quinn got to them, there’s really no way to predict how soon Chris Van Dusen and his writers will welcome other characters into Netflix’s Bridgerton world.
With that in mind—and starting with Decider’s own interviews with the Bridgerton cast—here are the five Julia Quinn characters we’re most hopeful will show up in a potential Bridgerton Season 2.
Bridgerton Season 1 ended on a fascinating cliffhanger: a heartbroken Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) coldly told his sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and best friend Hastings (Regé-Jean Page) that he was ready to find a bride. Who was he thinking of? Doesn’t matter. He’ll do it with a team of mercenaries (so he never has to have his heart stomped on again). You know, like a true Englishman!
So could Anthony end up marrying a sociopathic army? That remains to be seen… as does one of the most beloved characters in the Bridgerton series: Kate Sheffield… or Kate Sharma, as she’ll now be known!
Kate is a fun antagonist for Anthony in Book 2, as she’s the older, protective sister of the next season’s Unsung Hero. And while she’s not as aggressive as Anthony when it comes to thwarting her sister’s suitors, she does have to approve of her sister’s final showdown. It looks like Anthony will get a taste of his own medicine, something co-star Phoebe Dynevor revealed she’d love to help with during Decider’s recent 92Y chat with the Bridgerton cast.
“Anthony’s really involved in Daphne’s love life, so I think it’s time for her to get some revenge, to be honest,” Dynevor said.
Anyone else excited to see Ms. Sharma? Penelope Featherington actress Nicola Coughlan, who told Decider in an interview that because she read the books out of order, she was confused by Kate’s absence in Season 1.
“I started to annoy people because I started being like, ‘What about Kate?’ And they were like, ‘Kate doesn’t exist yet! Stop it,'” Coughlan told Decider.
Jonathan Bailey also told Decider that he’s excited for Anthony to confront Kate, but we’ll just link to his comments when we get into the spoilers…
Okay, we know that the Sterling cousins are technically two characters, but John and Michael Sterling are so inescapably linked to Francesca Bridgerton (Ruby Stokes), you can’t introduce one without the other.
Speaking of which… Francesca Bridgerton!?! Can we see more of her next season?
While there’s a bold thematic reason why the second Bridgerton daughter is absent from Bath for most of Bridgerton Season 1 (since she’s absent from the play in Books 1-5 and, um, 7 & 8), Francesca—and the Sterling family—will be charmingly charming in Season 2.
Claudia Jessie mentioned on last night’s 92Y talk that she’s excited to see her character, Eloise, mess around in her first season at the marriage fair.
Jessie said, “I’m pretty excited. The idea of Eloise being in that environment and doing things the way Eloise does is potentially the funniest thing in the world. Can you imagine her dancing with someone? Can you? I can’t.”
The problem is that Eloise was supposed to be out this first season, but her mother made her wait a year. So it makes sense that Francesca, who is close in age and has been tipped to spend a season in Bath, could make her debut with Eloise. Francesca is arguably the most naturally refined Bridgerton, which would make for a fascinating read.
