Bridgerton Season 3 : Colin and Penelope Share Their First Kiss

For Polin, in both the book and the film, their first kiss is when Penelope directly asks him for a kiss, telling him that she will go her whole life without ever being kissed if he doesn’t.

On TV, that moment happens at the end of episode two, right after it’s revealed to everyone that Penelope asked Colin for help finding a suitor.

In the book, the kiss takes place in the Featherington living room when Colin visits Penelope to express his heartbreak about thinking his sister Eloise is Lady Whistledown

How the carriage scene actually plays out

That’s right, in both the novel and the film, Colin and Penelope’s second kiss takes place in the carriage right before he FINALLY proposes.

Bridgerton Season 3 still, book to screen, Colin Bridgerton, Luke Newton, Penelope Featherington, Nicola Coughlan

Netflix decided to have the kiss and proposal take place in the Featherington carriage at the end of episode four, right after Colin ruined Penelope’s chances with Lord Debling (Sam Phillips).

He doesn’t yet know that she’s Lady Whistledown, essentially the Regency-era DeuxMoi. In fact, episode one ends with Colin expressing his hatred for Lady Whistledown after she writes some unflattering things about his “new” persona after his trip, telling his sister Eloise that he’s going to ruin who Whistledown really is.

In the books, Polin’s kiss and engagement take place in Colin’s carriage after he follows Penelope into town and learns her shocking secret: that she’s actually Lady Whistledown, meaning he enters their marriage with full knowledge of her double life.

What about Francesca Bridgerton?

Unfortunately, Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) is sometimes seen as the forgotten Bridgerton child, not because her family doesn’t love her, but because – as she does on the show – the sixth Bridgerton sibling prefers quiet and peace.

In the book series, it’s casually mentioned that Francesca found her husband seven years before we start with Penelope and Colin. However, executive producer Shonda Rhimes and team decided to incorporate some of the book storylines with Francesca, Colin, and Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) all looking for love in season three. Which brings us to…

On the TV show, Francesca becomes Queen Charlotte’s (Golda Rosheuvel) “diamond” of the season and finds herself courted by the Queen’s chosen Lord Samadani (David Mumeni), as well as her preferred suitor, John Stirling, Earl of Kilmartin (Victor Alli). (Sadly, Queen Charlotte is not a character in the books, meaning the monarch—and her truly fabulous headpieces—never anoints the “diamond” of any season.)

But luckily for her, she and John find the perfect match in each other and enjoy a small, home-grown wedding that book readers don’t get to experience. The couple then moves to Scotland, where their story continues. We’ll avoid giving away any details about Francesca’s future, but if you’re interested in spoilers, her story will be expanded upon in the sixth Bridgerton book, When He Was Wicked.

What Happened to Benedict’s Story?

Those who only watched the show might be surprised to learn that by the time Colin and Penelope got together in the books, Benedict had been married for seven years and was a fairly successful artist (the third book, An Offer from a Gentleman—which Netflix skipped in favor of the fourth—tells his love story).

However, in the show, he is still trying to find his way in life as the second Bridgerton son, avoiding marriage and instead hooking up with a cunning widow, Lady Tilley Arnold (Hannah New), and her friend Paul Suarez (Lucas Aurelio). Viewers will have to see how his storyline plays out in a potential fourth season.

Eloise and her new best friend Cressida Cowper

Eloise has a very different storyline in the show, namely that she is no longer friends with Penelope after she discovers that Pen is Lady Whistledown. Instead, Eloise is best friends with the upper-class bully Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen) after they bonded in the country. And when she learns that Colin and Penelope are engaged, she is devastated, believing that Pen has used their friendship to get close to Colin. It’s not until the end of the season that she realizes how much she misses Penelope’s friendship and that the two of them can be together again.

For Eloise in the books, like Penelope in the books, she
