Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan is letting us in on her filming secrets.
Filming a movie or a TV series involves long, endless days on set waiting for your call time, doing take after take, and getting your hair, makeup, and costumes touched up between scenes. That’s why many celebrities keep comfy shoes and clothes nearby so they can chill out and warm up when they’re not on camera — something Coughlan knows well, as she just revealed that she’s usually wearing sweats under those gorgeous Regency gowns in Bridgerton.
In a new interview with Pop Buzz, Nicola Coughlan shared the “one thing about the upcoming series” that she hadn’t shared with anyone. “I always wear really massive joggers under my dresses because it’s really freezing cold,” she revealed. “We’ll be shooting the most romantic scene in the world, and I’ll fully have joggers and UGGs on.”
The revelation definitely puts that carriage scene into perspective. (We are joking. If you’ve seen the moment in question, you know the joggers were safely in her trailer or offscreen at the time… But, hey, we never know what happened between takes, and you gotta stay comfy and warm when you’re hard at work.) “She was cozy!” says Coughlan. Perks of wearing those long, flowing skirts, right? If the “sweats under my costume” hack sounds familiar, it’s because we got a glimpse at a similar situation from Gossip Girl, when Blake Lively’s sweats made a hilarious cameo appearance in a scene from the series. In 2020, a fan noticed that Serena van der Woodsen is bare-legged in one scene, but her sweats are clearly visible when she stands up; they’re pulled down, but they’re definitely there. Whoops!
Thankfully, Coughlan’s choice of cozy offscreen-wear hasn’t popped up in the ‘Ton, because while it’s not out of character to hear an orchestral version of Pitbull while two characters make out in a carriage, sweatpants and UGGs hadn’t been invented in Regency London!
