The untold stories of Port Charles’ lost potential.
While General Hospital has introduced countless memorable characters over the years, some were taken from us too soon, leaving behind unfinished storylines and untapped potential. From mobsters to teen rebels, these four characters had the makings of Port Charles legends but were tragically cut short.
1. Dex (Evan Hofer)
Dex is the most recent addition to this list of lost potential. After surviving life-threatening dangers—including being stabbed and hung on a meat hook—this resilient rookie cop’s fate ended in mystery. Dex, who first appeared in 2022, made a name for himself as Sonny’s right-hand man while secretly working for Michael.
But there was so much more to uncover. Dex’s dark past, shaped by abusive brothers, hinted at a complicated family history we may never learn. Fans were left wondering: Who were his parents? Who were his brothers? His blossoming romance with Josslyn and his unexpected shift to the PCPD added new layers to his character. Sadly, Dex’s story ended before he had the chance to become Port Charles’ next big hero—or villain.
2. Trey (Erik Valdez)
Trey’s short-lived run in 2012 left fans wanting so much more. Introduced as Kristina’s boyfriend, his life turned upside down when he discovered that his birth mother was none other than Connie Falconeri. In a shocking twist, Trey’s ties to the mob world—through his father, Joe Scully Jr.—set him up for a complex future full of power struggles and dramatic twists.
Despite his marriage to Kristina and his efforts to bond with his estranged mother, Trey’s story was cruelly cut short. After a tragic car accident, Trey was left brain dead, marking the end of a promising character. If given a chance, Trey had all the makings of a future mob king, filling the void left by his father’s dark legacy.
3. Rafe (Jimmy Deshler)
Rafe was a character straight out of Port Charles’ mystical past. The son of Alison and Caleb—the infamous vampire—Rafe brought supernatural undertones back to General Hospital. As a teen, his romance with Molly captivated fans, as he found himself in a love triangle with her and TJ.
But just as his story began to unfold, tragedy struck. Rafe, under Victor’s orders, caused a devastating car accident involving Patrick’s family. The crash left him brain dead after emergency surgery, ending his storyline far too soon. With his mysterious lineage and undeniable chemistry with Molly, Rafe could have grown into a fan-favorite character full of supernatural twists.
4. Dev (Ashton Arbab)
Dev’s arrival in Port Charles was a breath of fresh air for the show’s younger generation. A lovable teenage grifter who forged a bond with Sonny, Dev quickly became part of the Corinthos family. Brando adopted him, and he found friendship with Josslyn, Trina, and Cameron.
However, Dev’s journey was cut short during The Floating Rib explosion in 2020. Despite Sonny’s desperate attempts to save his “cousin,” Dev succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital. Fans were left heartbroken, as Dev’s story—filled with secrets about his paternity and his unspoken feelings for Josslyn—was never fully explored.
