Hundreds of people have shared their thoughts on Netflix’s gripping new movie Leave The World Behind, but not many reactions have caught attention like Elon Musk’s.
The thriller arrived on Netflix in November and quickly shot to the top of the streamer’s Top 10 list, prompting many discussions over the plot.
It wasn’t long before Musk got involved in the conversation, though it’s unclear whether the Tesla CEO has actually even watched the movie.
Musk’s comment on the film came after Netflix took to X to share a clip from it featuring Julia Roberts’ character, Amanda Sandford.
In the clip, Roberts can be seen walking down a long line of Teslas which have come to a standstill on a road.
It doesn’t take long for Roberts to realize there’s a theme among the cars; they’re all brand new, and they all have self-driving features.
It becomes clear that the cars have been hacked via their self-driving software, and are effectively self-destructing by crashing into one another.
The scene makes for a pretty eye-opening example of how technology can be used against humanity, but that’s not quite the takeaway Musk had after coming across the scene.
Instead, he took the opportunity to try and promote Teslas by pointing out they could still run even if the world fell into an apocalyptic state.
He wrote: “Teslas can charge from solar panels even if the world goes fully Mad Max and there is no more gasoline!”Musk’s left-field takeaway from the clip quickly caught the attention of X users, resulting in a flood of tweets mocking him .
Many people claimed Musk had missed the point of the scene, with one commenting: “If Elon actually watched it he’d know that his comment has nothing to do with it.”
“Clearly did not watch the movie lmao,” another wrote.
Another X user suggested Musk had been ‘triggered’ by Tesla being featured, writing: “Best thing about “Leave the World Behind” is it triggered Elon.”
While Musk might not quite have understood the point of the movie, a lot of other people did, which is why so many were left disappointed by the way it ended.
However, author Rumaan Alam, who wrote the book the movie is based on, has made clear that he has no issues about the ending, telling Variety: “The key thing to look at… is that the book ends with a question mark .
“To end with the particular jolt of humor that [Sam Esmail] does is so satisfying and so rewarding.”
