A connection between Friends and Home Alone has been officially confirmed.
Taking to Instagram, Scott Westwood shared a video highlighting the apparent discovery of the connection. Westwood used clips from Friends and Home Alone to suggest that the house Chandler (Matthew Perry) and Monica (Courteney Cox) purchase as a couple is actually the same house where Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) and his family lived in Home Alone. This can be seen by observing the houses across the street, which look the same in both the TV series and the film. In the comments, Art Director Daren Janes confirmed this to be the case and explained how this all came to be.
“This is hilarious,” Janes said. “You caught me… I was the Art Director on FRIENDS & the house was a set. The actors walked in the front door, so we saw outside. We used the backing from a company called Pacific Studios which was made for Home Alone because it looked the best through the door & windows. Great eye my friend!!!!”
Do Friends and Home Alone Share a Universe?
The observation has been made in the past as well, but it hasn’t been until now when someone from Friends has given official confirmation. This doesn’t exactly mean that Chandler and Monica actually moved into the McCallister house as part of the two properties sharing the same universe. Notably, the Friends characters lived in New York while the McCallisters’ home is in Chicago. Nevertheless, it’s a fun find for fans of both.
Friends and Home Alone have also both been revisited in a way in recent years as a part of the streaming wars. In 2021, the cast of Friends reunited for the Max special, Friends: The Reunion, to reminisce about the hit sitcom. That same year, Disney+ released the sequel film Home Sweet Home Alone, which was set in the same universe as the original movies. It also featured a special appearance from Devin Ratray reprising his role as Buzz McCallister. The reunion special is as close as Friends will be getting to a revival, however.
“These six actors, the time, the place, everything was special,” Friends executive producer Kevin Bright told THR in 2021. “We don’t want to look at the show as a brand that you just spin it off into another generation. If we were going to do it, we want to do something maybe with the six characters, but we don’t want to do that… We’re not interested in doing it. It was a perfect ending; don’t touch it. “
Friends can be streamed on Max, while Home Alone is currently streaming on Disney+.
