The cast of Fuller House wanted the show to get a sixth season. Created by Jeff Franklin as a sequel to Full House, which ran from 1987 until 1995, Fuller House premiered in 2016 on Netflix. The sitcom centered around D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure), a widowed mother of three sons who lives in the Tanners’ childhood home along with her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber). Most of the original cast reprised their roles for the Netflix revival. One notable exception is that of Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen not appearing in the role of Michelle Tanner, though the character is mentioned occasionally
Back in January 2019, it was announced that Fuller House would be coming to an end with season 5. Despite its name-recognition, the revival had been dogged by cancellation rumors and even a bit of controversy throughout its run. Still, the sitcom has proved popular enough to survive on a platform that has earned the reputation of axing shows too early. In general, Netflix prefers to rely on new and buzzy content with the potential to draw in new subscribers rather than sticking to familiar titles. Considering those factors, Fuller House has been afforded an opportunity to provide closure for its characters and its fans.
According to Insider, Bure and the rest of the Fuller House cast were hoping for one more season. “The thought or the intent behind all of us was that it was going to go six seasons,” Bure said. The actress went on to say that the cast was “thrilled” to have five seasons, alluding to Netflix’s viewership calculations and noting that it might have played a role in why the series ended before reaching six installments.
Expressing some disappointment over the storyline paths Fuller House didn’t take in its final season, Bure mentioned some of what she felt the series still had to highlight. She particularly wished that Stephanie’s bond with her daughter Dani could be featured more, in addition to focusing on the comedy’s younger generation of characters.
Whenever a show goes off the air, especially when it carries a formidable legacy, there’s a complaint about the story arcs which would have unfolded if the series continued. In the case of Fuller House, it’s likely valid. Nonetheless, the revival survived behind the scenes turmoil which ranged from allegations of misconduct aimed at its showrunner as well as Lori Loughlin’s recent legal troubles. In an era where few shows are permitted the room to grow, Fuller House certainly had a respectable run.
