Get the Carriage Ready, ‘Bridgerton’ Season 2 Is Here: Here’s Everything We Know
Premiering on March 25, the season follows Daphne’s brother Anthony as he searches for a wife.
It’s been more than a year since viewers have been hooked on the Bridgerton family and the rest of the cast of Netflix’s drama. Set in Regency-era England, “Bridgerton” is based on the romance novels of the same name by Julia Quinn.
When the second season of the Shonda Rhimes-created show debuts on Netflix on March 25, viewers will be able to catch up on all the gossip Lady Whistledown has to share about this season’s main cast members, Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).
But take note, dear readers (or viewers): The second season is set to be different than the last. For starters, there will be less sex. “It’s a different story this season, with different characters,” showrunner Chris Van Dusen said of the changes at a press conference.
Below, find everything we know about the upcoming season.
Wait — how did ‘Bridgerton’ season 1 end? Here’s the recap
Season one focused on the love story between the eldest Bridgerton daughter, Daphne, played by Phoebe Dynevor, and the Duke of Hastings, Simon Basset, played by Regé-Jean Page.
The pair began a fake courtship to make Daphne more appealing and Simon more unattainable—until feelings got in the way. After the two were caught in a “compromising position” by Anthony, the eldest Bridgerton, the couple were forced to marry, despite Simon promising his father that he would never have children before he died. Eventually, the two reconcile their differences and admit their love for each other, capping off their happy ending with the birth of a child.
As for the rest of the cast, Anthony (Bailey) continues to have an affair with an opera singer, Siena Rosso, throughout the season. After a tense “will they, won’t they” episode, Siena decides to move on, deciding that Anthony cannot protect her. After this heartbreak, Anthony declares his intention to find a wife, adding that the difficulty is love, instead deciding that “removing it from any romantic relationship will make me better.”
Across the square from the Bridgertons, the Featheringtons are reeling from the death of their matriarch and awaiting news of a new heir. Penelope Featherington, Eloise Bridgerton’s best friend, ends the season devastated by the news that her unrequited love, Colin Bridgerton, is leaving town following the scandalous end of his engagement to Marina Thompson.
Eloise, determined to find out who is behind Lady Whistledown’s Society Files, discovers that her theory about the dressmaker, Madame Delacroix, is incorrect. On the night Lady Whistledown was nearly caught in her carriage outside a print shop, the dressmaker had been with none other than her second brother, Benedict, all night. In one of the show’s final moments, it is revealed that Lady Whistledown was in fact Penelope all along.
‘Bridgerton’ Season 2 Tells Anthony Bridgerton and Kate Sharma’s Love Story
Bridgerton season 2 will follow Anthony’s quest for a wife — ideally without any real romantic feelings. The show will introduce a new group of characters, the Sharma family.
Edwina Sharma, played by Charithra Chandran, has caught the attention of the queen and Anthony. But her sister, Kate Sharma (Ashley), refuses to let her sister settle for anything less than the best when it comes to marriage.
Bailey told Entertainment Weekly that a “love triangle” will emerge, as Anthony pursues a relationship with Edwina but can’t ignore his spark with Kate.
The season will also follow Penelope’s efforts to hide her identity, especially in the face of her best friend’s investigation. Eloise will likely continue her quest to discover Lady Whistledown’s identity, even as she emerges onto the social scene in her first season. “The central theme of season two is head versus heart,” creator Chris Van Dusen told Entertainment Weekly. “That’s true for Anthony and Kate, and it’s true for Penelope. Her heart is with Lady Whistledown, but even she has to wonder if becoming London’s most notorious gossip columnist is the wisest thing to do.”
