Ryan Guzman is trading in his firefighter gear, at least temporarily. Guzman, who stars as Eddie Diaz in ABC’s firefighter drama 9-1-1, has landed an exciting new role. But what does that mean for ABC’s long-running procedural?
Is Ryan Guzman Leaving 9-1-1?
Deadline reports that Guzman has joined the action thriller Midnight. His role, which is being called “pivotal,” is being kept under wraps for now, so no details on who he is playing have been released.
The cast of the movie includes Rosario Dawson, Alexandra Shipp, and Milla Jovovich. Dawson also produced the film with Shipp and Jovovich as executive producers. Joshua Otis Miller directed the film, which recently wrapped production in Connecticut
Midnight follows a young, blind woman (Shipp) “as she is hunted by a group of international criminals (Jovovich) searching for a package they believe was given to the woman by her federal agent sister (Dawson). However, the assailants quickly realize that the woman, though unable to see, may be far more dangerous than expected.”
Announcements like this one are often made after movies wrap, which means that Guzman, who is currently a series regular on ABC’s 9-1-1, isn’t set to miss any time on the show. Instead, the actor filmed Midnight while on hiatus from 9-1-1, which is now back to filming Season 8. The role, however, is a big step up in Guzman’s career and could mark a shift in the kind of roles he does moving in forward and what the future might look like for him outside and even beyond 9-1-1, whenever that might be.
9-1-1 is ABC’s first responder drama that follows a group of firefighters and paramedics at the Los Angeles Fire Department’s fictional Station 118. Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, the procedural drama premiered in January 2018 and spawned the spin-off series 9-1-1: Lone Star. It aired its first six seasons on FOX before it was canceled by the network in May 2023 and picked up by ABC. 9-1-1 was then renewed for an eighth season in April 2024 after it became ABC’s most-watched current series across all platforms following its premiere on the network in March 2024.
The show stars Angela Bassett (Athena Nash), Peter Krause (Bobby Nash), Oliver Stark (Evan “Buck” Buckley), Alisha Hinds (Henrietta “Hen” Wilson), Kenneth Choi (Howard “Chimney” Han), Jennifer Love Hewitt (Maddie Buckley), Ryan Guzman (Edmundo “Eddie” Diaz) and Gavin McHugh (Christopher Diaz).
Last we saw of Guzman’s character, Eddie was going through a really hard time, as his son Christopher had elected to go live with his grandparents after catching his dad in an embrace with a woman who looked exactly like his dead mother. Meanwhile, back at the 118, Bobby had been replaced by Vincent Gerrard, the former Captain of the station, with a history of racism and homophobia. There’s been no word yet as to whether Season 8 will have a time-jump or pick up right away.
