Gordon Ramsay opens up about the huge age gap between his children as he reveals secrets about his marriage
Gordon Ramsay is very different to his on-screen persona
Arguably the most famous and foul-mouthed chef of all time, Gordon Ramsay is known for his intimidating demeanor, but that may not be entirely accurate.
The multi-Michelin-starred chef is known as a family man who stays away from the kitchen and the screen, having six children with his wife Tana.
Ramsay reveals all about the secrets behind a successful marriage and the challenges of having children so widely spaced in age.
The Hell’s Kitchen star has spoken about having four grown-up children, a toddler and a newborn, and how he compares those experiences, even though he may not leave them any money.
Ramsay has six children; Megan, 26, Holly, 24, Jack, 24, Tilly, 22, Oscar, five, and Jesse, six months.
Despite admitting to People that his wife is ‘a fantastic mum’, he insists he’s a better dad to his two younger children, saying: “If I have to be critical of myself, I know I’m better because I’ve had the experience now.
I think we’ve done well with the first four so far,” he explained.
Overall, Ramsay thinks there are mainly advantages to having children with an age gap.
The chef said: “The second member of this family with two other little ones, I think they’re in a great position because they’ve been educated much earlier than their older siblings and they’re very passionate about their careers.”
His daughter, Megan, works for the Metropolitan Police in London, while his son, Jack, is in the Royal Marines.
The 57-year-old said his five-year-old son understands the importance of his older siblings’ jobs, even trying to put on his brother’s green beret.
The chef, who has been married to wife Tana since 1996, revealed how they have managed to work so efficiently for 30 years amid their busy schedules.
“Date nights are important, whether it’s going to the movies or going for a drive. We have a bit of time, but it’s quality, and that’s really important,” he said.
Ramsay insists it doesn’t have to be the weekend: “Everyone thinks Mondays are the dullest day. But it’s not.
“With a young family, we’re seizing the moment, and that date night moment is so important.”
The short getaways and little private time they spend together here and there have been essential to keeping their marriage going for so long, as it’s become one of their favourite ways to spend time together.
He revealed that the most recent instance was when they went to Nottingham to see their daughter Tilly at university.
The couple went for a walk around campus together before dining at a two-Michelin-starred restaurant, staying the night and driving home the next day.
Something else that might surprise you about Ramsay is that he once admitted that his wife cooked for the family, because their children thought his food was ‘too fancy’, as he put it.
He also on her favourite dish: “I would say it’s her lasagna bolognese, where she makes this amazing bolognese sauce. “It goes in the oven for about four and a half hours, it’s really delicious, quite unique.”
