Grab Your Besties for ‘Sweet Magnolias’ Season 4

Get ready for more margarita nights, because we’re heading back to Serenity, South Carolina, for Season 4 of Sweet Magnolias. Netflix has renewed the series, which follows lifelong best friends Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) as they juggle relationships, family, and careers in their charming Southern hometown.

Based on the bestselling novels by Sherryl Woods, Sweet Magnolias Season 4 joins Netflix’s lineup of comfort drama programming, including recent releases like Virgin River, The Lincoln Lawyer, Ginny & Georgia, Love at First Sight, Choose Love, and more. Executive producer Sheryl J. Anderson returns as showrunner, with EP Dan Paulson and co-EPs Norman Buckley and Matt Drake also back for the new season.

At the end of Season 3, Dana Sue and her estranged husband, Ronnie (Brandon Quinn), renew their vows in a beautiful ceremony attended by their nearest and dearest. Helen seems to be on track to reunite with Erik (Dion Johnstone), while Maddie is happy in her relationship with Cal (Justin Bruening) and poised for a new step in her career.

Swisher told Tudum in June that there’s plenty of ground to cover when the show returns for Season 4. “Even though this season ended with a nice button, it almost feels like it was a necessary button to really dig in deep for the future,” she said. There’s still so much to be told.”

And now we have an idea where the show might go next. Anderson tells Tudum exclusively that Season 4 will explore more of the conflicts introduced in the finale, “examining the twists and turns of romance, the complexity of friendship, the surprises that pop up in life, and how all these things make us more grateful for the people who love us, the people who fight for — and with — us, and the people who can make us laugh, whatever we’re going through.”

Season 3 saw major discord between the women for the first time, but Anderson notes, “True friendship is a living thing: It has to change and grow as we do. And that’s not always easy. But that’s what makes it beautiful.”

She continues, “The beating heart of this show is the deep relationship between these three amazing women, and how they sustain and celebrate each other. We’re always eager to share the moments that make life special with them and through them. But perhaps what excites me most about being able to bring Season 4 to life is that I get to collaborate again with our marvelous writers, cast, and crew. I get to live in Serenity again, to soak up the strength and happiness of a town where people truly want the best for each other and are willing to put in the work necessary to make that happen.”
