Twilight subtly foreshadowed two key moments in New Moon, which ended up being linked and impacting Bella and Edward’s relationship.
The Twilight Saga is full of moments of foreshadowing, and there are two in the first book of the series that teased two crucial moments in New Moon. Stephenie Meyer shared her version of vampires and werewolves in the Twilight book series, which took readers to a world where these creatures co-exist with humans. The main focus of the Twilight series is the toxic relationship between vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and mortal Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who had to defend their relationship from both vampires and werewolves, but mostly from a powerful and dangerous group of vampires known as the Volturi.
Edward and Bella went through many ups and downs throughout the Twilight Saga, and one of their most dramatic moments happened in the second movie, New Moon. Concerned about Bella’s safety but refusing to turn her into a vampire, Edward broke up with her, sending her into a deep depression but also bringing her closer to her best friend (and werewolf) Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner). The situation that led to Edward and Bella’s break-up, as well as what she did in order to feel closer to him, was actually foreshadowed in the first book, making an interesting connection between Twilight and New Moon.
Twilight Foreshadowed Bella’s Recklessness &Jasper’s Attack
The first book in the series, Twilight, followed Bella as she moved to Forks, Washington, to live with her father, Charlie Swan (Billy Burke). As Bella adapted to a new town, school, friends, and lifestyle, she was intrigued by Edward and his siblings, especially as Edward seemed to be uncomfortable around her. Bella eventually learned that the Cullen family are vampires, and she and Edward got together, and she became part of the family, so much so that the Cullens did everything they could to keep her safe from James (Cam Gigandet). At one point in Twilight, it mentions the story of a woman who cut her finger and a Danag (a vampire) sucked her wound, which foreshadowed Jasper’s attack in New Moon.
At the beginning of New Moon, the Cullens hosted a birthday party for Bella, but when she got a paper cut while unwrapping a gift, Jasper (Jackson Rathbone) reacted badly to the blood and tried to attack her. Another moment in Twilight foreshadowed Bella’s recklessness after her break-up, as Bella mentions that, if she had to, “I supposed I could purposefully put myself in danger to keep him close”. Before they got together, Edward always showed up when Bella was in danger, and after their break-up, Bella realized that she could see Edward whenever she was in an unsafe situation, so she put herself in danger multiple times.
How These Two Moments Marked Bella & Edward’s Relationship
Bella’s post-break-up recklessness and Jasper’s attack are actually linked, and they marked Bella and Edward’s relationship. Jasper’s attack during Bella’s birthday party is what made Edward realize that she wasn’t safe around her, so he broke up with her. Later, when Bella was putting herself in dangerous situations just to have those visions of Edward, Alice (Ashley Greene) told Edward she saw Bella in danger and believed she was dead, which led Edward to attempt to kill himself by provoking the Volturi. Bella learned about this and stopped Edward from revealing himself in front of a bunch of humans and thus angering the Volturi, though they still caught their attention and they were in danger for the rest of the Twilight Saga.
