On July 9, “America’s Got Talent” season 19 continued with the sixth installment of audition episodes. In this initial stage of the competition, each judge is given two “golden buzzer” decisions to make where they can send an act straight through to the live shows. Howie Mandel was “bowled over” by the surprise of 14 year old Reid Wilson‘s voice and delivered his second Golden Buzzer to the young singer. Watch the full performance in the video above.
When Reid came to the stage ahead of his performance, it was clear that he was holding back nerves as he prepared for the biggest moment of his life on the biggest stage. But mere seconds into his rendition of “You Don’t Own Me” it became clear that the wow factor of his unexpected vocal tone would win over the judges. He was able to gain his confidence midway in his performance, grabbing the mic and stepping away to stand on his own, which Heidi Klum noted in her critique. She thought the moment gave him “a little more stage presence” and called him “absolutely incredible.”
Sofia Vergara added that he overcame his nerves and “did amazingly” overall. Simon Cowell had his eyes closed for parts of the performance, saying that it helped meet the surprise of his powerful voice coming out of a “sweet young kid.” Howie added to the surprise factor of Reid’s voice due to his age and how he could overcome his nerves. Howie asked Reid, “Do you believe in dreams?” When he answered “yes,” Howie stood up to declare that “one of them is about to come true” and hit the Golden Buzzer.
As the next golden buzzer act of the season, Reid will skip the next cut and advance straight to the live shows. He joins 9 year old singer Pranysqa Mishra who got Heidi’s second Golden Buzzer in “Auditions 5,” Australian dancers Brent Street who earned Howie Mandel‘s first Golden Buzzer in “Auditions 4,” Argentinian dance group Legion who received Sofia Vergara‘s Golden Buzzer in “Auditions 3,” singer Liv Warfield and drone artists Sky Elements who both received the Golden Buzzer from Simon Cowell over the course of “Auditions 2,” and comedian Learnmore Jonasi and singer Richard Goodall who were chosen for the honor by Terry Crews and Heidi, respectively, during “Auditions 1.”
