The bombastic police procedural 9-1-1 has become a TV institution in its nearly decade-long run on the air, but will it score a season 9 renewal? Created for TV by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear, 9-1-1 follows the lives and work of first responders in Los Angeles who are tasked with tackling some of the biggest emergencies that the City of Angels can throw at them. Mixing the usual case-of-the-week format from procedurals with Ryan Murphy’s signature over-the-top style, 9-1-1 is both familiar and fresh in the oversaturated world of cop shows.
Despite being a consistent success, 9-1-1‘s time on the air has been anything but smooth, and it was canceled by its original network (Fox) after season 6. However, ABC saved the day, and quickly renewed the first responder procedural for seasons 7 and 8. Not missing a beat, 9-1-1 has continued to deliver the thrills and chills on its new network, and the switch seemed to breathe new life into the long-running series. This freshness makes the chances of 9-1-1 season 9 seem all the more plausible, and it’s only a matter of time before ABC orders more.
9-1-1 Season 9 Is Not Confirmed
ABC Hasn’t Ordered More Yet
With the debut of 9-1-1 season 8 still fresh, it’s no surprise that ABC hasn’t ordered season 9 yet. The network has found success with the procedural after taking it from Fox, but it isn’t quite strong enough to earn a multi-season order. Fortunately, ABC hasn’t wasted much time in renewing the show in the past, and the fate of 9-1-1 season 9 will likely be decided long before season 8 concludes. Season 8 was picked up during the run of season 7, and with strike-related delays out of the way, season 8 might prove to be more successful.
However, the franchise itself is on shaky ground and the announced ending of 9-1-1: Lone Star after five seasons doesn’t bode well for the flagship show. On the other hand, Lone Star didn’t make the jump from Fox to ABC, and it is being canceled by a network that was keen to cancel 9-1-1 after season 6. It’s unclear if ABC will want to save Lone Star as well, but that will all depend on what future plans are in place for the 9-1-1 universe.

Who Will Return For Season 9?
Shows like 9-1-1 utilize a strong ensemble of characters from season to season, and though changes are common, it is the continuity that keeps viewers returning year after year. With that in mind, the cast of 9-1-1 season 9 will probably feature a slew of returning faces from previous years, led by Angela Bassett’s Athena Grant, who has anchored the show since episode one. Though shocking deaths and departures could happen throughout season 8, Bassett will likely be joined by Peter Krause as Robert “Bobby” Nash (her onscreen husband), and stalwarts like Kenneth Choi as Howard “Chimney” Han.
There wasn’t much turnover between seasons 7 and 8, and that trend could continue as the series stretches toward the decade mark. Other expected returns include Oliver Stark as Evan “Buck” Buckley, and he’ll certainly be joined by the likes of Aisha Hinds as Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, and Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley. A robust series of guest stars is always a possibility as well, and character returns happen quite frequently also.
