Love Actually star announces engagement to Elon Musk’s ex-wife as fans ‘sobbing’ over sweet reference to film

Thomas Brodie-Sangster is known as Love Actually’s heartbroken Sam, younger son of Liam Neeson on screen. But fans are thrilled to see that he’s all grown up and making a thoroughly romantic announcement.

The actor, who was also in Nanny McPhee and, more recently, Game of Thrones, has announced his engagement to partner Talulah Riley. The actor, best-known for Westworld, is the ex-wife of tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Thomas’ Instagram post has an image of the pair on a punt on the river wearing sunglasses and hats. He is wearing a striped shirt and chinos while she has a woolen jumper over a floral dress.

The caption reads: “Happy to announce that Talulah and I are engaged. Love is all around X.”

It’s a sweet reference to the Wet Wet Wet song which first features in Richard Curtis’ Four Weddings and a Funeral and then made a reappearance in Love Actually as the song covered by aging rockstar Billy Mack.

Fans are thrilled about the engagement. emma_is_best_2007 harked back to Thomas’ past, saying: “bro 13 year old me is sobbing right now,” while justxtara spoke for the baffled many when she said: “I missed some chapters I think?!”

Movie fan sgwalklet posted a weeping emoji with the comment: “NOT THE LOVE ACTUALLY LINE.”

Bride-to-be Talulah was twice married to Tesla founder Elon Musk – once in 2010 and again in 2013. She shared a close-up picture of her smiling with her new fiance to announce the engagement on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, which is owned by Musk.

The 37-year-old wrote: “Very happy to share that after two years of dating, Thomas Brodie Sangster and I are engaged!”

The SpaceX founder was among the people congratulating the actress on the news, writing under her post: “Congratulations!” followed by a red heart emoji.

The couple met when they co-starred in Danny Boyle’s Sex Pistols Disney+ drama, where Thomas played manager Malcolm McLaren and Talulah, best known for her role in St Trinian’s, portraying punk fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood. The couple publicly announced their romance at the Bafta awards ceremony last March.

Thomas recently reunited with Love Actually stars Hugh Grant, Dame Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy and Laura Linney for a special 20th anniversary special of the film. In 2017, he re-created a scene from the original movie for Red Nose Day with Liam Neeson, who plays his on-screen step-father, with the two characters having a conversation about the “total agony of being in love”.
