It’s pretty unbelievable that a small town would have enough drama to sustain a decade-long soap opera, but Netflix‘s Virgin River just about fits the brief.
What started out as a humble nurse practitioner moving to a rural setting for a fresh start has evolved into abusive relationships, all-out bust-ups, and devastating family trauma.
Even so, one twist fans didn’t see coming in Season 5 is now set to play a “big part” in Virgin River Season 6 – here’s what we know.
Virgin River Season 5 twist will play “big part” in Season 6
According to an interview with showrunner Patrick Sean Smith, the revelation of Mel’s (Alexandra Breckenridge) father being Everett (John Allen Nelson) will play a “big part” in Virgin River Season 6.
For those who don’t remember, Season 5 Part 2 revealed that new resident on the scene Everett was in fact Mel’s father, visiting her claimed he needed to tell her something before the credits began to roll. Before this, the closest Mel had to a father figure was Doc (Tim Matheson).
Earlier speaking to Deadline, Smith explained: “What I think we’re exploring more in Season 6 is who Everett Reid is, what his backstory is, what his connection to Virgin River was when he met her mother, and then also what it is today since it’s a small town. I grew up in a small town, everybody knows everybody, so everybody has an opinion of everybody. And I think that’s what we’re jumping into in Season 6 is that Everett’s relationship with the town as well as Everett and Mel.”
“I don’t know as far as in what capacity, but he will [join]. It is a big thing that we’re exploring in Season 6,” he continued. “It just felt like an opportunity for a character who hasn’t had a living parent in her life; getting to see Mel with a living parent has been fun to explore. And also just finding another way that Mel is attached to this town in a bigger, universal, fated sort of way; that she was always meant to come to this place for many reasons.”
Many fans have been left scratching their heads over what Everett actually wants to tell Mel, which is likely to be discovered early on in Season 6.
“He has cancer with only months to live. And she chooses to know him only a short time anyway,” one Redditor mused, with another adding “I think he’s Vernon’s estranged brother. The hair is too similar to be a coincidence!! But I am loving the Charmaine theory.”
“I hope he is not dying, so that they have a chance to get to know each other, but I also do not want him to be Charmaine’s dad,” a third weighed in.
