Millionaire chef Gordon Ramsay and his “unlike any other” way of raising children
Gordon Ramsay almost never takes his children to high-end restaurants, even the ones he owns.
According to some current estimates, Scottish chef and TV host Gordon Ramsay is probably the richest chef in the world with an income of about 54 million USD last year, on par with music star Beyoncé.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, Ramsay candidly shared his lifestyle and parenting methods. The most notable point is that he firmly does not want to give the inheritance of his tens of millions of dollars to his four children, and wants them to live independently.
Now 50 years old, Ramsay declared: “My inheritance will not be passed on to my children, and I have no bad intentions in doing so. I don’t want to spoil my children. The only thing I agree with my wife Tana is to help my children pay 25% of the deposit to buy an apartment for them, but not pay the full price for the house.”
Ramsay said he taught cooking skills to his three daughters and only son because this is an important skill in life. He also almost never takes his children to high-end restaurants, even the restaurants he owns.
“I have never been excited about money,” Ramsay said. That’s not my top goal, and that’s reflected in the way I raise my children.”
Gordon Ramsay and his wife and their four children
Ramsay’s children are all quite grown up this year: 18-year-old Megan is in college, and Jack, Holly (both 17 years old) and Matilda (15 years old) are still in high school. They all have their own source of income and only receive a small amount of money from their parents.
Ramsay said Megan was given £100 a week, while the younger siblings were only given £50. Ramsay’s children also have to pay their own phone bills and daily bus fares.
To be as successful as he is today, Gordon Ramsay has gone through a long and difficult journey. His father was a notorious drunkard, promiscuous and liked to beat his wife, with the result that Ramsay left home to live on his own at the age of 16. Ramsay once pursued a professional rugby career, but then a knee injury forced him to retire from the field and return to a career in the kitchen.
Ramsay also said he never let his children fly first class with him and his wife: “They haven’t done anything enough to be sitting there. At that age, they don’t need to sit in first class. We are very strict about this.”
Ramsay continued: “Every time I get on a plane, my husband and I turn left to go into first class, and the children turn right into the economy class. I told the head flight attendant to make sure the children don’t bother me in this cabin. I want to sleep during the flight. I have worked very hard to be here, and you can only appreciate this when you have put in a lot of effort to get it.”
Now, Ramsay’s restaurants have a total of 16 Michelin stars, and he is almost the first name that people think of when it comes to famous TV cooking shows like MasterChef or Hell’s Kitchen.
In addition to Gordon Ramsay, many other famous people have also stated that they have no intention of leaving their assets to their children, such as billionaires Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, director George Lucas and singer Sting.
