My Favorite The Office Celebrity Cameo Only Lasted 10 Seconds And Was Still Hilarious

The Office took the world by storm after its debut in 2005 and included some hilarious celebrity cameos and guest appearances. Of course, the show owes much of its success to Michael Scott (Steve Carell), but the entire ensemble cast of The Office works together collectively to create a show we all hold so close to our hearts. Admittedly, the show takes a slight dip in quality after Michael’s departure in The Office season 7, but I think there’s still a lot of good stuff concealed in the last two seasons.

Even minor The Office characters would sometimes steal the show, not to mention all the guest stars that appeared throughout the show’s nine seasons. One of my favorite parts of watching any sitcom is keeping an eye out for any celebrity cameos scattered throughout, and The Office is no exception. In fact, it’s filled with stars that range from having extensive screen time to only very brief moments – but Conan O’Brien is my favorite celebrity cameo in The Office, which only lasted 10 seconds and was still hilarious.

Michael Scott Entirely Misses Conan O’Brien In New York

The scene sees Michael mistake a lady walking through the Rockefeller for Tina Fey and approaching her as the camera pans to Conan O’Brien casually walking by. The scene itself is funny, but it’s Michael’s reaction after the fact that makes me laugh every single time. Carell is an expert in comedy and this scene is one of the funniest scenes in The Office because of Michael’s disbelief that he missed meeting Conan because of the “fake Tina Fey.” Greg Daniels and Conan O’Brien were not an unlikely pairing, as their friendship dates back to Harvard and Saturday Night Live.

Season 2, episode 16, “Valentine’s Day,” takes Michael to New York for a corporate conference with Dunder Mifflin’s head office on Valentine’s Day. I think this is the one episode that establishes who Michael is and what we can expect from his character throughout the rest of the show. The episode’s key recurring joke is Michael having his hopes set on meeting celebrities during his time in New York City, so when Michael stands at the Rockefeller Center later in the episode as Conan walks by, it’s hilarious.

The Last Two Seasons Of The Office Had Major A-Listers

There’s a huge range of A-List stars across the nine-season run that it almost becomes commonplace to expect quite a few scattered throughout one single season. The minor role cameos are the best of the bunch, but I may be biased because I had so much fun spotting them on my first-ever full series watch of The Office. Individuals like Bob Odenkirk and Jim Carrey have brief appearances on the show, appearing for a few moments and not contributing much towards the show’s overarching plot, but the actors are clearly having fun during their fleeting appearances on The Office.

However, the guest stars on the show quite often held far more importance than the main plot, particularly in the last two seasons. Kathy Bates and James Spader had major roles to play in Sabre International’s takeover of Dunder Mifflin. These actors had the opportunity for far more screen time after Steve Carell’s departure, and while characters like Robert California (Spader) were not overly appreciated, they offered something new to The Office in the wake of this major loss. It was a more subtle kind of humor that allowed the leading protagonists to preside over the guests.

Conan O’Brien’s cameo in season 2 of The Office was not his only moment in the hit series. The comedian hosted the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards in 2006, and his opening segment saw him inserting himself into a range of popular television programs, from Lost to 24, and, of course, The Office. The scene sees him climb through the ceiling of the Dunder Mifflin office, alongside the whole main cast. In true Conan fashion, he appears to fabricate a romance in a brief scene with Pam Beasley (Jenna Fischer).
