New Details Emerge About ‘The Office’ Spinoff, Which Has Now Been Ordered to Series

Everything to know about Greg Daniels’ new show.

The Office reboot that fans have been wondering about for months has gotten a series order from NBC—only, as previously reported, it’s not actually a reboot. It’s more of a spinoff. The series, from Greg Daniels, the creator of the U.S. version of the show, is “set in the same universe” as the original show and will follow the same documentary crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch as the team embarks on a new project.

Here’s what we know so far about the Office comeback.

Is there a reboot of The Office?

There is a spinoff in the works with Greg Daniels and Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman, as opposed to a proper reboot.

Responding to reports of a reboot in an interview with The Wrap in November 2023, Daniels said, “I don’t like to think of anything as a reboot, you know what I mean? Because I feel like we ended that story beautifully. The characters had closure. I would never want to redo that same show with a different cast, because I think we got the luckiest cast, the best cast ever, in TV, to do that show. So the notion of a reboot is not of interest.”

That said, he told The Wrap, he was interested in continuing the universe in some way.

“The notion of maybe something like the way The Mandalorian is a new show in the Star Wars universe, you know what I mean? Something like the notion of this documentary crew doing a documentary about a different subject,” he said.

“That, I think, could be intriguing and creative. But I don’t even know what you would call that. I don’t know if that’s like a sister show or something. I don’t know what the term is. But it doesn’t feel like ‘reboot’ would be the appropriate term for that.”

Since then, it’s been confirmed that the series will follow the documentary crew from the original show as it embarks on a new project: chronicling a dying historic Midwestern newspaper as it attempts a comeback with the help of volunteer reporters.

Ricky GervaisStephen MerchantHoward Klein and Ben Silverman, who were involved in the original British series and/or the American version, are all executive producing the new show.

What is The Office spinoff release date?

There is no release date just yet.

Who is in The Office reboot cast?

Like the original Office, the new one will have an ensemble cast, and the series has already tapped its first five stars: Domhnall Gleeson (The Patient), Sabrina Impacciatore (White Lotus), Melvin Gregg (American Vandal), Chelsea Frei (Poker Face) and Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever). Details about their characters are under wraps.

Interestingly, Gleeson starred with Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott in the U.S. version of the sitcom, in the drama The Patient.

In a June appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Carrell shared that he spoke with Gleeson before his former costar accepted the role in The Office. “He’s an excellent actor,” Carell said. “And he actually called me and asked, you know, ‘Should I do this? Is this something…Did you enjoy it?’ I said of course.”
