It’s the question on everyone’s mind: will there be a Sweet Magnolias season four?Netflix tends to be known best for huge genre originals like Stranger Things and Squid Game, but some of the streamer’s biggest success stories are actually far more modest than those blockbuster hits.Like Virgin River, Sweet Magnolias is a heartwarming, easygoing drama that’s become a favourite among subscribers worldwide in ways that hearken back to the best comfort shows on TV.Three seasons in, the series (based on books by Sherryl Woods) is going stronger than ever, which means we’re hopeful for a fourth run soon.

Sweet Magnolias season 4 potential release date: When’s it back?
Netflix eventually confirmed that Sweet Magnolias would continue on past season three, but it took its sweet time. But that’s pretty typical, as these things often depend on how many subscribers tune in during the first 30 days of release. Thankfully, on October 19 2023, they did indeed confirm the show’s return.

Those involved in the show will be relieved, as they were certainly hopeful that Sweet Magnolias would be back on our screens.

Brooke Elliott, who plays Dana Sue, hopes there’s still mileage in the show for more episodes, telling TV Line: “That was the brilliance in the way it was written. The finale did have some closure, but if you dig in, you can see that there are still stories to come.

“There are other pieces that could be revealed. Hopefully we get more. That would be great.”

We shouldn’t have been too fearful over the lack of news since the third season, since the gap between new seasons of Sweet Magnolias and subsequent renewals has been growing longer. Season two was confirmed in July 2020, two months after season one dropped, and then there was a three-month gap between season two and the third-season renewal.

This all meant that we were unlikely to hear more on the show’s future until autumn 2023 at the very earliest. And that’s how it played out. But now that a renewal has been announced, we could probably expect new episodes to arrive in late 2024.

Sweet Magnolias season 4 cast: Who will be in it?
Sweet Magnolias just wouldn’t be Sweet Magnolias without the three women who star at the heart of this show. So, of course, it’s safe to assume that JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Maddie Townsend), Brooke Elliot (Dana Sue Sullivan) and Heather Headley (Helen Decatur) will all return for a fourth season – as long as Netflix wants that, at least.

Aside from that central trio though, any member of the cast could technically return or drop out, as proved by Bianca Berry Tarantino’s departure from the role of Katie Townsend ahead of season three. Due to scheduling conflicts, she was replaced by Ella Grace Helton, who will likely continue the role into a potential fourth season.
Sweet Magnolias season 4 plot: What will happen?

What happens next in Sweet Magnolias will of course depend on what happened last season – and for now, we want to keep things spoiler-free.

Sweet Magnolias author Sherryl Woods (via Parade) thinks there’s plenty of potential storylines to fill a fourth season – and possibly even beyond.

“There are many storylines that leave room for discussion – Cal and Maddie, Helen and Erik, Noreen and Jeremy, and Bill and Kathy, to name a few,” Woods said. “There are so many things that could be done and there are so many things [where you think], Wait, what happens next in this? And you always hope that people are wanting more and wanting the next stage of things.
