Tana Ramsay reveals son Oscar’s heartbreaking comments about his late brother
Gordon Ramsay’s wife has spoken eloquently about her experience of losing a child on the Postcards from Midlife podcast
Tana Ramsay has given a powerful and insightful interview on the Postcards from Midlife podcast, sharing her experience of losing a child and how she coped with feelings of “guilt”.
Gordon Ramsay’s wife suffered a miscarriage five months into her pregnancy in 2016 and has now revealed that the family will “never get over” the loss of their son Rocky. The couple are parents to children Megan, 26, twins Holly and Jack, 24, and Tilly, 22, and welcomed Oscar, five, and baby Jesse, eight months, in the years since the tragedy.
In one of the most heartbreaking moments of her interview with podcast hosts Lorraine Candy and Trish Halpin, Tana revealed how difficult it is to deal with her young son Oscar’s questions about his brother.
“Even Oscar now, he talks about Rocky, his brother in the sky or the star. And he’ll say things like, ‘I really don’t like him there. Why can’t he come here?'” she said.
Tana went on to say that her grief comes in waves – one day she’ll be strong enough to handle it, but the next day a small trigger will set her off.
“I still feel so guilty. Should I have known something? Should I have done something differently?’
“It’s one of those things where some days you’re totally fine and you can justify it.
“Other days, for whatever reason, whether it’s because you’re so tired or something’s affecting you, I can have a day where I feel really emotional.
“You don’t expect to hold a baby knowing they’re not going to last more than an hour. That’s always something I’ll never, ever get over.”
The star also discussed how difficult it was to navigate the excitement of Oscar’s arrival while dealing with feelings of guilt.
Tana said: “One of the hardest times was actually after I had Oscar, and he must have been about three weeks old. And I had a day where I felt really emotional. I think it was guilt where I thought I didn’t feel enough about Rocky because I was so excited about having a new baby.
“And it was confusing, and I remember Gordon saying to me, it’s always going to happen to you like this now, because we’ve been in this bubble.
“And then suddenly you think, I feel like it’s unfair that I haven’t thought enough or been sad enough. You never know what’s waiting for you in grief, and we’ve never had anything like that.”
Tana and Gordon’s family life
The Ramsays are devoted parents to their large brood, and they grew closer after losing their son Rocky.
Speaking of the time, Gordon admitted that the tragedy “brought their family closer together”. “We were devastated, but thankfully we got through the worst of it. It can happen to anyone at any time. It brought us all a lot closer together,” he shared.
The couple welcomed baby boy Oscar in 2019 and are smitten with the cheeky little boy – who bears a striking resemblance to his famous dad.
His sisters Tilly, Holly and Megan run a dedicated Instagram account for him and their devotion to their little brother is evident.
So it came as a surprise when Gordon and Tana welcomed baby Jesse James into the world in November last year. The Ramsays kept Tana’s seventh pregnancy a secret until the birth.
Sharing a picture of Hell’s Kitchen star Gordon kissing the youngest member of the family as she recovered from labour, Tana wrote on her social media account: “It’s been a stressful nine months but we made it through and we’ve been blessed with this little angel. The Ramsay family is definitely complete. Jesse James Ramsay, we love you so much.”
Meanwhile, Gordon’s announcement came alongside the news that their family was finally complete. He shared: “What an amazing birthday present, welcome Jesse James Ramsay, 7lbs 10oz whopper!! Another bundle of love to the Ramsay army!! 3 boys, 3 girls…
