The Conners is canceled! Spinoff to END with abbreviated season seven… six years later Roseanne Barr was fired from reboot over racist remark

It’s over for The Conners at ABC.

The network has canceled the Roseanne spinoff effective after the upcoming seventh season.

The last season is believed to have six episodes bringing the series total to 106 episodes after the series finale on May 22.
The Conners premiered in 2018 after Roseanne Barr was fired from the reboot of her eponymous sitcom after making racist remarks about former Obama administration aide Valerie Jarrett.

The series was rebranded and Roseanne’s character was killed off before the first episode aired.

The ending may be bittersweet for John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert, who have been playing the characters Dan Conner, Jackie Harris and Darlene Conner since 1998.
The Conners was wildly popular with audiences, remaining the most-watched sitcom for its entire run to date.

When ABC made the announcement, the network released the first ‘farewell season’ promo which featured storylines from both Roseanne and The Conners.

Both shows hit the 100 episode milestone, making it a rare sitcom franchise to have two series that both hit the 100 show mark.

‘You’ve been part of this family for years,’ the promo says, mixing footage from both shows. ‘After 6 seasons, be there to say goodbye.’

It is Sara Gilbert who has been championing the series with the network all along. She was instrumental in the re-branding of the show after Barr’s firing.

And last year, she told the network that she wanted enough notice of cancellation to give the series a proper ending, Deadline reported.

The outlet asked executive producer/showrunner Bruce Helford last month, before the renewal notice, if he had a series ending in mind.

‘We’ve got a final episode that may be one or the other. We love it,’ he said, calling the episode ‘unexpected’ and ’emotional.’

But it hasn’t come to that yet and America’s favorite blue-collar family will be back for another season.
Audiences will get another season to enjoy the show – but had it been canceled, the show did have a scene in its pocket that it could have added onto the season finale to turn it into a series finale.

The seventh and final season of the Conners is expected to air in 2024-2025.

ABC also renewed Abbott Elementary and at present it is the only other sitcom on the network’s schedule.

Gina Rodriguez’s Not Dead Yet was canceled after two seasons.
